Red Emperor help

Gday everyone. Ive recently moved to Dampier and was wondering if anyone can help me out with some info regarding the mighty Red Emperor. Definately not after co-ords or anything (but if you are feeling generous!), just a point in the right general direction would be greatly appreciated. (Search function had mixed results). Getting tired of not catching anything!

Thanks in advance.

Head towards Wandoo and sound

Tue, 2012-01-17 17:23

Head towards Wandoo and sound around the contour lines till you find a dropoff or some ground in 40+mtrs.

If its not too windy do a couple drifts and see what you score, but anchoring is better.

Livies or squid heads or snapper fillets/wings for bait.

mate suggest you get a map of the area and dont head to wandoo on your own the first time , weather conditions can change of the Pilbara coast quickly

Tue, 2012-01-17 17:51

deep water, i'm still looking for them mate so best of luck with them, you either need a nice day or a big boat to get to the red grounds out wide, night time is worth a crack too, sometimes calmer too.

Now I am pretty sure you gave him the coords off a rig

Wed, 2012-01-18 13:46

or at least within an exclusion zone.

exclusion zones

Wed, 2012-01-18 13:56

are 500 meters only. Cautionary zones are further out.

I know

Thats why I suspect he might have given him a "joke" coordinate to within that zone.

be preared to travel.Head

Wed, 2012-01-18 15:51

be preared to travel.

Head north out the damiper port past the anchored ships out to the 50m mark

Sound around, most fish out that way are not on lumps (The only lumps ive seen out there are small pieces of coral). Very productive on the rising tide, 2 hours before high.

Same as someone else said above, if your catching bycatches like rankin, reds are not far away!

Thanks Bodie, hopefully Ill get some bycatch like that!

Crasny1, I checked on the chart and the co-ords arent near a rig or anything, so I assume its all legit!

Skeptical

Wed, 2012-01-18 17:29

Neels was just skeptical is all, you dont hear of many kind folk giving away spots these days. Koudos to you for doing so. Dont take any offence bigalow.

I was a little sceptical and it was not intended

Thu, 2012-01-19 13:25

to cause anything other than a laugh. It is unusual for anyone to give a stranger a spot and I thought this might have been a prank.

All in fun mate. Im from up here aswell and have to find your own spots, and then keep them close to heart. That doesnt mean I dont give away pointers to spots, just not grid points.

The advise given

Thu, 2012-01-19 13:33

is correct. I find the tide is critical with by far the best 3hrs before and leading in ti high tide.

On the sounder as mentioned you dont see much but look for small variations in bottom, like subtle rises and falls. Depper better, but >50m the chance of getting it to the surface drops due to the Taxmen honing in.

I fish 30-40m, but have caught 6 reds in a row between the Mrs and I (2kept only as we only eat fresh not frozen fish) in 13m of water on the edge of a snapper hotspot that gaurantees you a feed off tasty NWsnappers, big flag and MJ's, amongst others. Again this was towards the top off the tide.

Most we have caught have been on dark, and they bite through the night, unlike coral trout that goes night night.

Sure  beats  sweating  it  out  in  my  tinny  all day keeping  the  flies  company  at Nickol river  and  airport/fields  creek! Still  had plenty of  time  for  a  brew  and  counter  meal at point samson tavern after! Skimpies would have topped off a  great day! Good onya biggaboo!
