Record funding available for recreational boating facilities

The Liberal-National Government has set aside a record $1.85million for the development of local recreational boating facilities in Western Australia.

In calling for submissions for funding from round 15 of the successful Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme (RBFS), Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said there had been an increase of $150,000 in the funding available last year.

“The RBFS is important in providing funding for new or improved facilities which benefit recreational boat users,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Eligible authorities may also apply for planning grants which result in detailed plans, cost estimates, approvals or similar for recreational boating facilities.

“Recreational boat owners with a proposal to improve or create public boating facilities should approach their local authority to discuss an application.”

The Minister said boat owners helped to improve facilities because the RBFS was funded from boat registration fees.

“The RBFS provides recreational boaters access to upgraded ramps, jetties and amenities such as trailer parking and waste facilities in locations along the coast and on inland waterways,” he said.

“Boating is an incredibly popular activity in WA and the RBFS assists by helping authorities provide infrastructure to meet the growing demand.”

Since 1998, the RBFS has allocated nearly $9.3million to more than 200 projects across WA.

Mr O'Brien said following a review of the guidelines, eligible authorities were able to apply for more funding for projects worth $120,000 or more. However, grants remain capped at a value of $500,000.

“For projects worth less than $120,000, the funding ratio is still 75 per cent of the cost,” he said.

Applications for the latest round of funding are due by March 30, 2010. Application forms and further information about the RBFS are available at http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/rbfs or by contacting the RBFS Officer on 9216 8917.

Stick a needle in my eye.
Fact. WA Govt generally take over 11 mil in fees from boat owners as a standard.
The recent new increases in fees of around 24% amounted to over 1.85 mil of new income to the govt, (our money). Out of that we are seeing what,,,,, a massive 150k??? The rest of the cash goes to CRF (govt Coffers)
In real terms, the percentage of cash available for boating facilities upgrades has infact dropped from 18% of licencing fees to a mere 15%. We have been bent over the bonnet on this one folks. Now unclench.

I do not wish to stick a needle in your eye,you are %110 right The state goverment have increased the costs of boating dramaticly over the past 2 years, and I agree, there is a new marina down at Woodmans point, but I do not know who paid, the local Shires or the State, but what has been done in the northern areas, sure there is talk of a big marina development at Ocean Reef, but once again, who is funding it?the local shire (rate payers) interested business? the developers?Yes Im sure the goverment will be there to have photos taken but, what about the congestion at Hillarys marina,if you go there on a Saturday/Sunday or public holiday when the weather id good it is a bloody shambles, cars are allowed to park after 12noon for free in what is and was meant to be a recreational facility, but it seems the comercial sector associated within the marina complex has been able to get parking for cars free, and if a trailer boat owner is unable to get there before noon he is batteling to find a parking spot for his car and trailer,WHY,there are also safety aspects with people on foot, push bikes and walking cutting accross what is a busy traficable area with boats being launched/retrieved,am I the only one that thinks this way,? jersey

A simple case in point, Woodman point is currently undergoing mods to the parking area (and not before time). I have actually priced the hard stand area to be sealed. Originally it was to be 36000m2 of sealed pavement (thats right 36k meters) However the gov dont have that sort of money so they have cut it in half coz they cant afford it. Where have our boat license increases gorn Minister.

Oh and to cofirm your earlier comment on the funding of such ammenities. The only reason that the woodies ramp was done up was because the developer up the road paid a large chunk of loot into it so as to not have us public boaties up there.
