Rec. fishing licence renewal.

My fishing licence is now up for renewal, my beef is that this is a blatent descrimination against engine powered boat owners as opposed other boaters e.g. yachts and kayaks, etc. So we can have one licence per "engine powered " boat, and we have about 20,000 boats taking part in fishing activities through out WA. Say an approximate revenue for the fisheries of $600,000, probably much more depending on who has brought licences, but we have about 640,000 persons taking part in fishing activities. If every person who fished had to buy a $5 licence, the income would be $3,200,000.

OK the figures are a bit up in the air, but as far as I am concerned everyone who puts a hook and bait in the water is affecting the balance of the sea. Why is it the moles and wharfs are lined with people fishing, but not contributing a single razoo to the fish up-keep, and a few boat owners are pinged, just because we are easy picking, i.e. Rec licence numbers on record, boat rego's etc.

I am not against paying for a licence, I agree something must be done, I'm against this discrimination.

Income generated.

Income generated would enable the employment of more officers, isn't it a common complaint on this forum, that fisheries are not policing the shore based fishers, as I understand from the comments are the offenders for catching undersise, or prohiited fish?

Who's talking about having more than one licence?

Did a bit of research.

Victoria and NSW have a blanket licence, you wanna fish you gotta have a licence. Perhaps the WA fisheries officers should get on their excercise bikes, because the fisheries officers in those two states must be able to handle that situation. The other states have various licences, from special areas in the NT, all inland for Tasmainia, SA is still wondering.

I agree, I used to be against the idea of requiring landbased fishers to have a licence because so many families might fish once a year say on the family holliday to rotto or down south. But surely there is a way around this, like having a cheap $5 one week licence and allowing kids to fish for free (in the company of a licence holder, one persons bag limit etc).

I was talking to a friend from germany the other day and he was saying how before getting a licence over there you had to take a brief quiz on fish handling, limits, closed seasons etc. I know this would be impossible to implement but I reckon its great in theory.

Sounds reasonable to me.

Also if we could put employ another 10 fisheries officers full time with the money raised through licences, then we could better police our fishing laws which would result in more fairness for everyone and our fisheries could be sustained for a longer time?

You would need an army of fisheries officers to police the land based fishos properly. All you need is a very hefty fine if caught without one and most people would buy a licence. I'm all for it if it keeps a few of the less serious fishers off of the beaches. The herring rigs on marlin sized gear is always a bit of a giveaway . In my experience these are the one's that keep anything they catch and leave all of their rubbish all over the beach after a session. People who fish regularly at a spot don't abuse it. You don't sh1t where you eat.

I have seen a lot more of fisheries than usual of late though, probably because of the number of shorebased tailor people seem to be catching. I can't stand fishing right next to someone when there's thousands of kilometres of beach on this island so the poor fisheries buggers had to walk over 1km down the beach to check me out. They made me pull in both of my balloons which I wasn't too keen on in the marginal wind conditions. I had herring on mine but DO NOT use undersized tailor for livebait no matter how tempting it is to do.

Members in Vic or NSW

Mon, 2011-02-21 16:13

I agree there is alot of coast line, but its my guess that the fishers in the boats there, havent got fishing licences now anyway. The bulk of the population is in the metro areas. Surly it must be pretty easy for fisheries officers to check woodman jetty, or the ammo jetties, unless the offenders decide to swim for it!

If there are members in Vic or NSW, how do they police it there? You have a blabket licence for fishing.

My point is that the persons who own a boat with a motor are paying into the fund to support every other person fishing!

And I would assume by enlarge that this group are a pretty responsible group, and are following the rules.

You only need a license to keep fish not go fishing in a boat. As long as there is one license on board you can take one bag limit.

I take my kids fishing in the boat and they dont have to have a license. Which is good cos they love catching and releasing most of thier catch anyway.
