PR Knot

Hey everyone,

Been practicing the PR Knot but noticing a little bit of slippage at the half hitches on the leader when testing, Ive been using pe 8 (112lb) Varivas Casting braid with 200lb Varivas Shock Leader.

To test I tie my leader to a pole and pull backwards gradually tightening the drag on the saltiga 6500, I nearly get it full locked before the BRAID fails. after looking at the knot is when I realised the half hitchs have slipped, not all but maybe 3 sets out of 6, but even though the half hitches are slipping its the braid just above the knot that breaks.

Ive tested the knot 3 times an all 3 tests broke at around the same point.

I know nearly full lock on the saltiga is a lot of drag but wouldn't of thought 112lb would break at close to 30kg drag pressure when meant to be close to 100% knot strength.

Should I be worried? Going to Vanuatu to target gts and doggies and would hate losing that monster fish due to my knot failing.

you think 20kg drag pressure is plenty to stop big gts?

Are you burning the end of the leader? i have found when you burn the leader sometimes u can create a sharp edge that then rubs on the braid..

I think you're doing the right thing testing before you go. One thing the knot guru's don't emphasise much is the combination of main and leader may suit one knot and not another. I would test the braid on its own to make sure its OK and then try the other knots to see if they may suit this particular combination of mainline and braid better. 20 kg of drag is like holding up a 5hp outboard with your rod , I don't think many could do that for more than a few seconds!

Hey Jimbo, I do burn the end

Hey Jimbo, I do burn the end of the leader but breaks abit hire from that point, just gotta keep playing around with it.

That's pretty useful info there PBS, ill test a few other knots also, think 20kg of drag should be plenty.

Cheers for your help.

 Try testing the braid ..

Try testing the braid .. Without a knot .. Just wrap it around the pole .. See if it still snaps at 30kg .. Test your drag with scales too .. Also try the GT knot .. I've never had that fail

I use the PR with confidence

I use the PR with confidence after a lot of practice,I lightly rough up the end of the leader with sand paper to help prevent slippage and make sure when tying hitches that you alternate the hitches ie one over one under.Any slippage in braid creates friction .

Hey glen, I have the same

Hey glen, I have the same problem with the FG knot. I can't seem to lock the half hitches tight enough and they slip up as soon as I load the knot up. I don't seem to get it with the PR though, and so I use it instead.

 Look up the breaking strain

Look up the breaking strain of your braid on Paulusjustfishing - that's the starting point.
