Placement of cray pots
Submitted by sea-kem on Mon, 2009-12-21 11:18
Was just wondering if anyone had ideas on how best to set a cray pot. It's my first season of fishing with pots. Do they go on top of the reef structure or on the sand near reef? Any feedback appreciated.
Cheers
Andy

Best to try keep them on the sand, blut close to the reef.
Im dropping mine in 12-22m of water currently, and i try get the pot within a metre or 2 of the reef edge, and quite often will use the boat to help pull the pot closer to the reef.
The waters are very clear at the moment, so should be able to see your pot sitting on the bottom, if in under 14m or so.
Hope this helps.

cray pots
Same as bodie, but always rememeber to allow for the change in the weather, if the swell comes up and southerly blows will you be able to retreive them safely, also never hurts to try dropping near reef in the weed banks also ensure you have plenty of weight in the pots ( ballast ) to prevent currents from moving them

yer on the sand as close to the reef as possible. if your fishing shallow its good to go for a scnorcle and see where the good ledges are, then place your pots.

oh and make sure the amount of rope your using is relevant to the depths your potting.
Too much rops in the water can cause the rope to snag up on the reef.
Usually try keep 3-4m of slack rope to allow for the swell.
