To Ping or Not to Ping

If you were one of the lucky few with a Radar would you use it to ping people from a distance?

Call me scum but if I had the power I would use it for evil and ping everyone without them ever knowing

That would be a dog act,

But I know you would ping people - Pilbara Dave, you were the man who taught me the way of evil and showed me how to ping people.

See at the kennel for a beer later.

I've had the radar overlaid the chartplotter but never seen a boat fishing anywhere I would go looking for fish myself.

Seems to be a common thing amongst the Woodside boys in Ktown, heard from a lot of crew they are the worst going around for pinging.  Seem to have built a dodgy reputation amongst the fisho community up there! ;)

Interesting rumour. I keep forgetting those Woodside blokes are the only ones in town that have the money to buy a radar and use it.

if you have a radar on a recreational boat....what else are you going to do with it??? therefore to my way of thinking if you have a radar - you are a dirty pinger....have to admit though it definately would be tempting sometimes if you had one on hand :P

Fri, 2012-03-30 16:05

How good are you at estimating distance over water? Certainly been handy when at exmouth for figuring exactly how far away those rigs actually are. Unlit vessels at night..... Birds working on a very calm day, list goes on.
One I am usually on is a rescue boat and it is generally used to space boats into an even search pattern.

The more you use it the more effective a tool it becomes.

Fri, 2012-03-30 13:23

I probably would, but I have my spots which produce so I cant see myself using the "pinged" spots.

Last monday, we went out very wide and were plagued with little snappers.  Decision was made to go further east to a nice little lump which puts out nice reds.  After travelling a couple miles, we saw a boat which appeared to be roughly where our lump was.  As we got closer, we realised he was right on it..........D'oh, after doing 60 bloody kms.  Anyway, he was not happy with us, thinking we were pinging him.  They were pulling in fish after fish, but we were a few hundred meters away getting nothing.

If we had the radar, maybe we could have avoided the half hour trip, only to find someone in "our spot"

Sorry if we upset the guys in the yellow boat, but you were in OUR spot..

Generally radar on a trailer

Fri, 2012-03-30 16:13

Generally radar on a trailer boat wont pick up other boats that far away if its not flat calm weather, maybe you could get him from a mile or so.

We used ours all the time fishing in geographe bay at night, good for seeing if the rain squalls are gunna get you too. If that makes me a dirty rotten pinger so be it.

I can see plenty of merit in having a radar but if its sole use is to ping other fishos marks then you are scum and obviously a  fisherman with no skill. nough said.

i love how every one thinks they are getting pinged

Sun, 2012-04-01 15:48

and pale ale how is it YOUR spot? did you build a wreck? even if you did it still isnt yours,  alot of the spots around the place are common knowledge and alot of the good ones would have had a cray pot on them from time to time so anybody who is on the water often would know them, i laugh at all this talk of pinging! yes it does happen but i would guess over 50 percent of the time YOUR spot is actually THERES too. as for the radar i wouldnt be using it to steal ground

hear hear snapper.

It certainly does go on and can be annoying but lots of people maybe read too much into it.

Something that I really dont get on this subject, is that while most view and spew about it being a dog act, yet see no problem with "pinging" a pro's cray pots? And yes I have picked up fish around craypots.

Yet it is still someone elses fishing spot, that you have not found. How is it different?

Mon, 2012-04-02 10:14

The question was , if you had a radar would you use it to ping people ? Thats a bit different to driving past the spot and  pinging it on your way somewhere else which i dont agree with either but thats me. Obviously if you are using it to ping other spots then you dont already have those marks in your GPS. I accept the fact that quite a few crew have most likely got the same spots. Geez half the satisfaction of catching fish is finding them yourself , gives you more a sense of achievment. i reckon crew who ping were the same crew in class that cheated at school.

Tinnie Ping

Mon, 2012-04-02 17:56

Its an interesting fact that you do get pinged a fair bit when in a tinny. I guess folk believe that if you are 10 miles out to sea in a small open boat you must know what you are doing! (sadly usually not the case)

Pinging is just bloody rude

Mon, 2012-04-02 23:15

I basically raed the top and skipped to the bottom now.

After some trailor repairs needed, and Wait awhile in Kcity been stuck off the sea for way to long.

Headed out to a fav off ours, just to arrive and there it is, aboat on my spot.

Instead of moving to the spot, go to plan B. He is on it but I dont own it. So moved onto 2nd options, and we did well, apart from having to skull drag fish away from a 2-3m whaler that was dead keen on a free feed.

Ended up loosing none, but skull dragging a BBone up 20m still wasnt fun for both fish and fisho, but the shark didnt get the free feed.

We both headed home and I approached them and told them that it was also a nice mark for me and did they do well. Taxman all day but it was a civil, and he knew I was heading his way, just to stop, assess and go to plan B.

I wont ping ever, wont appear to.

lazy pricks pingers if you ask me. Do some work and you will get a few backup plans.

JMO.

hahaha nice! I considered getting a radar for my boat just for when i go out night fishing, but after doing the research there basicily good for nothing on a trailer boat and then you get labeled a "Pinger" or maybe evan a woodside worker!
