and use it for beach fishing, lure chucking from a boat and I'm sure it would be alright for jigging as well. Spooled with 20pnd braid it is an extremely good reel for it's price.
I just bought the 560 live liner (slammer) few days ago I think it's great for the hundred bucks I paid for it new loaded with braid. Landed a couple of whoppers one being a 52 cm tailor and a 4ft shovel nose it didn't even break a sweat
I've had a 760 on one of my beach outfits for years now. It's been banged around in the back of the ute, dropped in the sand then rinsed in the ocean & kept on fishing & has a crap load of genuinely big fish under it's belt. Still going as strong today as the day I bought it & I havn't exactly been gentle on it or kept up with the maintenance very regularly. The Slammer is the toughest spinning reel ever made, no Stella will stand up to the punishment the Slammer has.
I love my Shimano reels as much as the next bloke (most of mine are Stradics but I do have one Stella) & the Stella is strong with a magnificent drag but it also has fine tolerances & it simply won't handle the rough treatment that a Slammer will.
When those die hards drop thier $900 reels in the sand, rinse them off in the ocean & keep fishing with them for the next month without any service or any problems they can bitch at me. Until then they will just have to accept that there's a difference between tough & strong, namely, how it can be treated. You simply can't treat a Stella that way & expect it to keep running as smooth & as strong as it was. Each to thier own & thier budget.
Mine gets mostly used on the beach.......thrown into the rod holders on the bull bar and driven down a corrugated road to and from home. It very rarely even gets rinsed and is still going strong.
I know the old saying is u get wot u pay for. But penn reels even now they are coming out of china now are still tough I also have an 850 n 950 and they have copped a flogging. Although the Finn nor is a excellent tough reel. Bit more expensive though
Okay, ill put it simple for you aswell as summing up what everyone else has said in 4 words.I have a 760 perfect beach reel all metal invincible. i got 250m of 25lb mono.
Use the 560 and have a 750SSM for my son and i,indistructable beach reel, just imported a couple of 5000 series spin reels with matching flick sticks by Penn as well,so far so good. Will know how good they are when the salmon season starts
I've got a 650ssm & 950ssm as well as the 760 slammer I mentioned, all for beach work. To use, there's honestly no difference between the two apart from the SSM's being larger & heavier in the hand. Both reels are super tough & are ideally suited to beach work, either will do well for you.
i have the 260 with 12lb nanofil for salmon - the 460 with 20lb braid for snapper and the 760 liveliner with 50lb braid for anything bigger and i love them hence i have the 3!
I don't have any slammers but I have 4 spinfishers. A 950, 2 750's and a 550 and they are all tough as nails. For the price you can't go wrong. I use them for all my beach and cliff fishing and they haven't let me down once. If there was one complaint - although I have nothing to compare it to, braid does get caught on the spool from time to time so vigilance is required or nasty knots happen but apart from that they're awesome value for money.
How/where is the braid catching on the spool Howa Hunter? Just interested because I've never had that happen with my SSM's or heard of anyone else having that as a problem.
It happens once you have cast out as the bail arm flicks over. If the line out (the line leaving the spool) is on the same side as the bail arm in its open position, when it flips over it drapes the line over the spool then once winding commences it gets caught on the drag knob. Its not every cast where this situation arises but maybe 1 in 10 needs correcting. I find it usually happens when casting light lures or baits casting where the line isn't taut when the bail arm goes over. Hope that is a clear enough explanation.
Yeah my problems have all happened with braid as others have that I have witnessed. I think the lighter the line and the less memory it has the worse it becomes. But like most things - individual experience will vary!!
Edit: Gotta be careful not to hijack this thread (sorry fishRamma) but I find it occurs Cityflicker when the line is in the wrong place in relation to the bail arm before it is flicked over after casting. Not all that much can be done to prevent it but after you have undone a few knots as a result of it happening, the extra attention for 2 seconds after each cast is no biggie in comparison.
Yep, I had the same problem when I had fireline on mine. No issue once I put proper braid (power pro) on it.
EDIT: I guess it's just a matter of making sure you have the bail arm in a different position when you cast if it only happens when it's in the down position you mentioned.

Slammer or SSM? as a surf reel? I can't tell the difference on specs. Would either cast further?
