Palm Beach Crabs and Fishing

 Hi Everyone,

Heading down to Palm Beach jetty in a couple weeks to try and get a feed of crabs and hopefully some tailor. I have looked on previous posts and know that it may not be the best fishing. I have been there before and seen people going for squid, seen bream and tailor being caught and heaps of crabs were caught. Also is it worth bringing down some squid jigs? Going to bring a drop net for the crabs, put in some mullet head or the cheapest fillet of steak that I can find.

On the tailor side of things, I will use a gang of 4 size 3/0 hooks with a whole mulie baited on. should I put a sinker or floater on the rig for the jetty? When casting out should I just leave it or reel it on slowly? If the bait doesnt work I will put a gold Halco twisty on and see how it goes. Is it worth putting down some small baits fir jetty fish.

I will not use a surf/beach rod, I will use a 7.6 foot with a size 4000 reel, also I will use a small bream rod for the jetty fish.

As I said I have used the search tool.

Lachie

I live just around the corner and go down to palmies for a flick to get bait all the time. Best time is 9-12pm when all the weekend warriors and gumbys have left. Tailor can be caught all around the jetty but they aren't very big so you will have more luck with whitebait and small lures than you will with mulies. The bottom platform is great, standing on that and casting towards the shore is the best way to get tailor and herring there. You can also get snook from under the jetty itself. Squid are there but they are small, you might get 3 or 4 small ones if you're lucky.. there are better spots for them.

Yea the squid lately have been really quiet and flighty, tailor are normally about like flangies said the bottom platform is your best bet, there have also been some pretty chunky herring about recently.

As for the crabs- I also live local and this year has been one of the most disappointing for crabbing off Palm Beach Jetty.

Compared to last year, every crabbing session on the Jetty was successful,it was standing room only on the Jetty, everyone was getting a feed. Not this year-word is out,and there is hardly anyone doing any crabbing off the Jetty.

But,I'll give it another go early tomorrow morning trying for a feed again,so I'll let you know -ohh you do know that you now need long ropes on your nets with the new height of the jetty.

No-You would have been on the new Jetty-most of the crabbing is done at the end of the Jetty, deeper water.

I cant speak personally cos I haven't gone for crabs but when people have the nets down or scoop they always seem to get some.  And I've seen some stonkers cruising around when I've gone for squid and herring in the shallows.

Ok. Will not be serious, just hoping for something. Will just have to hope. What type of bait would you put in your crab net? Also if anybody goes tailor fishing here, what pound and type of trace would you use.
