P66/simrad

Just upgraded my sounder too a simrad go9 with a p66 upto 10knots its brilliant but im having trouble with it reading at speed. Mounting it on starboard side 3 different hieghts with zero effect the angle too me seems ok a couple mm below level. Thinking of trying it on port side if that helps unsure my hull may just be noisy. Ive told told too wet box it unsure on options any help at all would be be great. 17ft fibreglass. Pride cavalier

 Hi Dale, Presume it's not

 Hi Dale,

Presume it's not mounted inline with any streaks or other hills fittings ? Can you stick your head over the back at speed and confirm it's mounted in 'green water' ? I wouldn't change sides as the prop can introduce cavitation and cause interference.

is the transducer tilted forward to compensate for the transom angle ? It might be worth tilting it a bit more and burying it a bit deeper even at the expense of a rooster tail.   unfortunately it's trial and effort

There is a streak that stops

There is a streak that stops halfway up the hull on the left side of transducer and one that finishes at transom on the right of the transducer have centered it best i can. It is tilted slightly forward. But havent used the supplied wedge yet

Wedgies still hurt!

Feel ya pain mate , I have a haines pro fish deep vee hull and have tried alot of different things to tune in a p66 on a furuno 628.........

The boat came with a hds 7 with gernectic lowrance bullet transducer that seemed to read well even at 15knots........

Updated to the furuno which is so much better and the set up is great at lower speeds but just looses it above 12knots or so.....

I have tried deeper , then shallower via a stainless adjustable bracket slide , more angle , wedged , silicon between the hull and tranducer to streamline flow

but all to no avail ,,,, and looking over back its in clean green water, and yes have muddled around with sounder settings too but just cant crack it......

off course 99% of the time it works well because your sounding below that speed but would be nice to pick up flares and interesting blips while cruising along.

I solved exactly that problem

by getting my Lowrance 50/200 hz skimmer transducer (not chirp) and putting it inside the hull, down the back about 300mm from transom, in the middle where I have no strakes and firing through the hull.  Works at any speed and its with a Simrad NSS Evo3.  I just cleaned the area with acetone, used bathroom silicone and made a pile pushing the transducer into it to avoid air bubbles.  I used silicone instead of sikaflex in case I wanted to shift it.  I later added a 1kw in hull medium chirp transducer and run them together, the lowrance on 200khz.  To be honest, there is very little difference in performance, no interference.  That worked for me.  According to Airmar, in hull transducers are just as sensitive though they may show about 5 to 10% loss in depth performance.  Your hull must be solid fibreglass, not foam reinforced for this to work

 wagyl, how does that work

Sun, 2020-11-15 08:00

wagyl, how does that work with heat distribution ? My understanding was the fluid used in the yellow box through hull units acts as a transmission media but also a heat dissapator ?   I know my TM185 can't be run out of the water due to heat issues.

Not long enough to get the weight of the boat down in the water .Length to weight ratio not enough when on plain to clear the turbulent water under the boat unless you go bow up and drag your ass ,in hull P79 works for me but only up to a certain speed and right chop and swell conditions.
In hull will work ,if worried about heat in ducer 50mm storm pipe with cap sico (fill with dist water) and a few holes will fix that problem.

The Lowrance 50/200khz skimmer is 600W max

and I have been placing this in hull for a number of years on my boats.  I have not had any heat issues, remember ther is only about 1 to 2 mm of silicone between the transducer and the hull, with a bit surrounding it when I squish it down.  Think about your physics, there is about 12 to 18mm of glass between it and the water and the water is flowing over the outside of the hull.  So the hull is kept at an even temp all the time, and not heating up.  If you feel the transducer, it is not even warm.  With the 1kw transducer, which is in the recommended Airmar wetbox, I have no idea if that gets hot, and it is only surrounded by less than a litre of fluid.  I would have thought that a litre of fluid would heat up around the transducer, in a plastic housing, if there was a lot of heat output.  Just try it, it has worked for me for years with the Lowrance skimmer transducer.  Maybe there is something in the fact that the ocean water cools the hull and cooling the transducer.  All boats are different, but both of mine work very well at all speeds (unless I'm airborne or its very sloppy.  I have a transom mount chirp transducer on the stern of my boat that came with the Lowrance unit and I can't get it to work over 5 knots.  I tried silconing it in the hull, and it didn't work at all.
