Overhead or Spin?
Submitted by boyscout on Sat, 2010-01-30 10:43
I am looking to start fishing off a friends boat and going for bigger fish off jetties.
So i need to buy a new rod and reel.
Any suggestions for an all rounder 400-600? Also on which type either overhead or spin.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

over head usually makes
over head usually makes bigger fish a bit easier but spin makes it more fun. for jettys and stuff id say spin cause u can get good casts but saying that some star drag overheads can get pretty good casts 2. but i just prefer spin. maybe try something like a saragosa fork out some more cash for a stella =D

Fin Nor Offshore 95
Massive drag (60lbs) and massive line capacity for a spinning reel. Line capacity for the big fish in case you get spooled from the jetty. $209 from Oceanside.

Not sure I'd really say that
Not sure I'd really say that using a ofs95 for an allrounder would make fishing fun. The thing weighs a ton. My tip would be a small saltist star drag and an uglystick.

i wouldnnt go overhead
the cheaper ones are usaull not that good.
go the spinning gear, say a penn applause, a spinfisher.
reels like this can land big fish, i've got a 650 spinfisher and love it cos one day i can be bait fishing off quobba for the pinkies and nor westers and the next be baicasting for jumbo tailor near perths off shore reefs.
its pretty unlikely youre gonna get spooled off the jetty and if you do i'd say its probably too big to catch and is unstobble.

depends on which you do more
depends on which you do more often....
If its jetties or any landbased spots more often then I would go spin as its more versatile. Easier to cast, unless of coz you can cast an overhead proficiently.
