Okuma HS30 Drag Issues
Gday Guys,
Over the long weekend down south, I learnt that the drag on my Okuma Hardstone 30 reel isnt working correctly. I think a double hookup on some skippy might have stuffed the drag. It has some drag, so it isnt like its in freespool, but there is no adjustment. Is this likely to be just a drag washer? I have never taken any reels apart, and am a bit worried about not being able to put all the finnicky little bits back together. Should I take it to a store and get them to service it?
I generally try to look after our reels, but they spend a bit of time in the bottom of the boats so they arent really aesthetically pleasing but I give them a rinse off after each trip.
Im hoping to be able to get this fixed and be able to fish this weekend, but If its knackered, I might splash out and get a new reel.

Odd - its a multi-layer washer drag
I thought it was the same as the EB80 - simple to remove the circlip under the drag knob and then have a look at the washers (ensuring they go back in the same order) - more inclined to think something foreign has got in as they are pretty indestructible

I have had a look at the drag washers
They are all there as per the exploded diagram and look in reasonable condition. One other thing, this reel came with a spare spool, I swapped them over and by tightening the drag and spinning the empty spool backwards I can feel the drag getting tighter so it would appear to work on the spare spool.
Now I just have to work out either how to get the braid from the old spool to the new, or if I should just go and buy some more braid for the new spool. The fireline on the other spool is only about a month old. I am currently running 8lbs, and I use this rod/reel for 99% of my fishing. I dont think I would worry about dropping down to 4lbs on the second spool, would the casting distance be that much difference?
Its just that I fish all over the place and I am pretty happy with the versatility of the 8lbs being strong enough to pull fish out even if there is structure around. Last time I was actually fishing for whiting with a double header bottom rig when we got into the skippy and a few double hookups I think are what has broken the drag, So I think I would prefer to stick to 8lbs.

maybe one of your drag
maybe one of your drag washers have worn out completely, leaving the stack one short. That can cause the issue you're having. Best to get your local tackle store to check it out.

Cheers Honsu
I was thinking that would be the route I have to go down. Do you guys have a "reel service" charge? The whole unit has been banged around and definately hasnt seen any lubrication since I bought it a while back. I just figure I should get it completely sorted out as I was rather dirty last weekend when it limited my fishing to using my gf's rod/reel:/

There's a full reel
There's a full reel service charge but bring it in and we can determine whether its worth the full service or just do the minor repair to keep it going.

Why you should have reels respooled by professionals.
I took it to Oceanside this morning. Honsu pulled out the drag washers and there wasnt a problem. Entirely my fault. I was in a hurry when I respooled the reel about a month ago. I put the new line on at home and didnt put it onto the reel tight enough causing the whole quantity of braid to rotate around the spool. Honsu worked this out in about 2 mins flat, and then took all the line off and put it back on again. When he did, the reel was only about 50% full showing the difference between machine spooling under tension and doing it by hand.
Honsu pointed this out, and then took all the line off, put on some mono backing, and then respooled all my braid for me.
Absolutely awesome service, Cheers Honsu for your help, and although I am broke right now I will certainly be back when my 4wd is on the road to buy my next rod/reels/tackle from you.
