Ok, so theres been little talk so far.

Since there was a similar thread last year, wondering what everyones plans are during the upcoming ban?

Hot topics from memory from last year were, Tailor, KG's sambos.   Anything different for anyone else?

Personally, think im gonna leave the boat out of the water for a while and give her some tlc.  Some much needed work required (like fitting a new tranny to read deep water:) ).   Also might give the fresh water stuff a bit of a play.  Probably the only boating stuff i may chase is Tailor on the reefs (Hlokk this is you :) ) and possibly some KG's on the back on the 5.

Everyone else??  Do the tuna start to heat up during this period?

More diving mate - take some pictures and do some exploring for me.

Squid and KG's I suppose will also be on the hit list at times.

Lots of stuff to do! I'm

Tue, 2010-09-14 09:51

Lots of stuff to do!

I'm going to be targetting the KG's, and hopefully land a few. And of course, those offshore tailor ;). Also, hopefully some tuna if they're around.

Also want to get some sambos berleyed up for the tinny, and hopefully get some on plastics, poppers and catch one on the fly. Same with some skippy.

Have heard of people berleying for sharks on the three mile and wouldnt mind actually catching a shark bigger than a tiny greeneye in 200m.

Will try to find some more whiting/squid ground and scout out ground on the sounder for various things. Perhaps go sidescan some wrecks too.

Then theres bream (and possibly flathead), both in the swan and down south (blackwood, walpole, etc).

Also, want to try for some trout this season as I havent properly fished for them before.

And of course, as Jamie mentioned: Cray diving!

(though, as its warming up a little, I also want to take the tinny to some offshore reefs for a surf).

Hmm, maybe thats a little too much for 2 months :p

Will be fishing as normal,

Tue, 2010-09-14 09:55

Will be fishing as normal, just won't be bringing back any demersals. I'm quite happy to have a couple of months of catch and release on the light gear. Just because your banned from taking fish home dosen't mean you have to stop fishing. I think its been proven that demersals will release properly if handle correctly. I will also be going out to ping some pros while they are catching spawning fish. Great way to find new ground, just look for the pro boats. I think the ban is a absolute joke when the pros are allowed to fish during this time. Whats the point of stopping recs from fishing during the peak times and allowing the pros to take whole schools during this time. Doesn't make sense to me. Love to see what scientific evidence says this will help fish stocks. Complete load of w##k if you ask me.

I was under the impression that the demersal closure meant that you are not only allowed to take demersal species, but also not allowed to target demersal species at all.......... As I'll be away with work for most of the closure it won't affect my fishing plans too much!

You are right, you're not allowed to target demersal species.

Brendan has a lot more fish to play with down there though, so fisheries wouldn't be able to prove he is targetting them as doubtless he is not, they would just be bycatch.

Commercial ban?

Tue, 2010-09-14 10:24

I thought that commercial fishing in the metro area was banned from 2007?

Yep your right mate, but not

Tue, 2010-09-14 10:46

Yep your right mate, but not in the SW. The pros have a ban now down here and start up again very soon. The ban in the metro area isn't helping us down here. In fact its actually making things worse. Several boats that use to work in the metro area now working down here.

Fishing is still allowed during the ban, your just not allowed to keep fish. How could they police this anyway without stopping fishing completely. Whats to say I'm just jigging for sandwhiting and the dhuys are a bycatch? Just like the Pros fish for whiting and end up with dhuys as bycatch.

yes you cant target

Tue, 2010-09-14 10:46

yes you cant target demersals but if you accidentally catch 1 you while chasing KGW or sambo's you have to release it with a release weight.P.

My take is that the demersal

Tue, 2010-09-14 13:48

My take is that the demersal ban is there to give the dhuies and pink snapper a rest for 2 months, so the intent is not to target them, even if catch and release is the plan, as there will still be a percentage of released fish that will die (a large percentage of dhu methinks....).

Sure, no one will be able to police it, but I guess it comes down to trying to do the right thing. The whole commercial fishing situation certainly muddies the waters, but I guess if us recreational fishos take the lead and do the right thing, maybe governement will bring in "better" legislation for commercial fishing as well.

I have found that a 2 month break from demersal fishing is a blessing in disguise, so why not take the opportunity to do something a litttle different and give poor old Mr Dhu a break for 2 months....

Totally agree John!

Having the attitude that "how can they prove it" or "the pro's do it so can i" is pretty poor mate.. It's for two months, surely you can target another species in that time that WONT result in constant dhu bycatch.

It would be nice if everyone did the right thing, but there will always be a few who spoil it for everyone. Next thing you know, there will be a total ban on all fishing during this period because it IS hard to Police, and too many people just go out and take the piss.

Sorry guys, I totally

Tue, 2010-09-14 19:14

Sorry guys, I totally disagree. I have not got the attitude of "how can they prove it"or "if the pro's can do it so can I". I am all for the conservation of demersals. I actually release way more fish than I keep. I will keep fishing during the ban because I believe and others have proved it that dhuys release well, if they are caught and released in the correct way. If fish are not skulled dragged up I find almost all will swim back on their own accord. Its the fish that need the release weights are the ones that are more likely to die.

Also fishing is part of Australian culture and if we start accepting these new rules it will only be a matter of time before they introduce more. As rec fishos its about time we stood up for ourselves and not be told by the government, recfish, fisheries, pros etc that a ban on rec fishing is acceptable. Speaking to my grandad the other day, who has both fished both commercially and recreationally, he couldn't believe we had fishing bans. He said its just not Australian. Why should the pro's have any share in the dhuy stocks. All they do is commerically exploit them for profit. Your average Australian doesn't buy dhuy. Most of it gets exported, sold to restraunts or brought by the lucky few that can afford it. Rec fishing has way more benifits to the community than commerical fishing.

One other thing that shits me is people who say what would I the average joe know about this subject. This attitude was shown at the recent rec meetings where some guys  tried to have their say but were spoken down to by the people running the meetings. I haven't got a uni degree or done studies on the fish, but I have spent the last 20 odd years targeting these fish up to 3 times a week. You learn a lot more from life experiences than reading some book.

As far as I am concerned the ban is on keeping the demersals, not C&R

I'm looking forward to C&R whatever I can get (if that includes V738 then so be it)

Why target C&R demersals

Tue, 2010-09-14 16:11

Why target C&R demersals when you can target C&R sambos that fight better for their weight and release better?

I suppose it's the pursuit

Wed, 2010-10-06 21:11

I suppose it's the pursuit of my personal target species - and to improve my abilities of finding and catching them

Sambo's just don't do it for me - if I was after a fight I'd target sharks and rays, and I am just not into that either
