Ocean Reef incident
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2009-12-10 10:46
I am hoping that this is not a FW member or someone a member knows.
Apparantly a man in his early 30s was looking at a problem at the back of his boat just 200 m offshore from the Ocean Reef marina when it is speculated a wave upset his balance and he fell into the water.
Thankfully he was rescued by a passing vessel, while his new 5.8 m centre console boat sunk to the bottom.

i jsut did my skippers ticket through school and our instructor told us that a boat should be able to float for 3 hours with a hull full of water?

5 metre
From what I can gather from 2007 all boats under 5 metres had to have floatation fitted or built in

Under 6m and you're required
Under 6m and you're required to have foam, over and you can have air tanks, but the vessel still must float with the largest of these open.

To shed a little light
on the incident from yesterday we were heading back into ocean reef marina after pulling the pots and about 100mtres from the entrance noticed all this gear floating in the water and quickly put two and two together another boat was just pulling someone onboard near the rocks as he had already swam about 50 metres from were the boat was sinking all we could see was the tip of the bow rail going under and we raced over to them (other vessel) to make sure he was the only person on board incase we had a real seriuos situation on our hands after establishing he was the sole person and the other vessel had already notified sea recue we raced back to the sinking vessel but it had already gone under so quickly so we proceded to collect all his gear eskies, bags, sandwiches and general floating stuff and all we could do was watch the bubbles rise up from the deep although it was only approx 8 mtrs deep the poor centre console looked along way down laying on its side on the sea floor.
I did manage to grappel his anchor rope and pull that up but unfortunatley it wasnt tied onto the boat so I tied a float onto it as a marker and dropped the anchor back down to mark the exact spot of the vessel.
After returning all his gear to him on the other vessel and asking a few of the obvious questions like how the hell did that happen so close to the marina........
He was a little shaken up and i hope u have insurance mate but im sure next time u wont forget that oh so important bung..................

Speed
It's amazing how quick it can happen. Been boating for quite a few years now and I though it would never happen to me.
Earlier this year launched in Beadon Creek and started moving downstream to the mouth, said to my Dad that the steering felt funny as the boat seemed to be wallowing on its rear end. BUNG!!!!!! Gave it full revs to try an get it up on the plane but the weight inside the hull was to heavy, thankfully the high capacity bilge was something I check every trip out and it started just fine. Steered into the shallows near the sandbar so I could beach it if required, then jumped over with the bung. Finally got the bung in and started breathing easier. Still took a good twenty minutes to empty the hull via the bilge pump. Lesson learned, never change your pre-launch routine and make sure your bilge pump works even though you think you'll never need it.
Hopefully this chap's boat is recovered without too much damage, apart from his pride.

couldnt really
see that well once she was on the bottom but na i dont think it was a brand new one he did say it had a 90hp yamaha on the back and had just recently bought it but judging by the speed it sank i dont think it had any floatation in it at all?
Big john im sure the old forgot the bung trick happens (hopefully never) but pretty often to lots of people just depends how quickly u realise and / or have the know how to get out of the impending situation glad to hear u pulled it off :)
young crew at boat ramp coupla days ago realised pretty quickly and jumped over screwed it in then proceded to start the bail process along with the bilge goin flat out was a little amusing but was pretty safe tied to the jetty in 2 mtre of water

Bob has a routine
I just stand there, while he puts the bung in and gets the boat ready in the prep area of the club, but I still ask him "Is the bung in," with him looking at me if looks could kill hahahah In Leeman he preps the boat before we get to the ramp, bung in before we leave the caravan park with me saying the obvious
Thank goodness the chap is ok and I think thats all that matters as you can replace a boat but not a life.
