Occy Pot Set Up

Hi FW Members,

Long time member and forum stalker but don’t really post, which is going to change starting now! I've purchased my my own boat and working locally now so should have plenty of time to get out on the water.

I've read a few posts about occy pot set ups and thought I’d share the set up I'm currently making. Feel free to give me any feedback, advice or opinions (good or bad). I've currently made 6 pots, they're made from 100mm pvc left over from a drainage job out the back and some left over patio tube. I blanked off the back of the pvc and poured concrete in that along with adding concrete to the patio tube to stop any rolling. Really I could have done without the caps and just taped the end until the concrete sets. I plan on running a main line and clipping pots on ever 5m - 10m.

I’m in 2 minds about rigging my pots with a float and gear I.D or just marking on my GPS without a float, yes I know this is illegal :/

I thought if I used a float others will be able to locate them easier and pull them, I was hoping that if they did they throw them back close by and I could find them next time by searching for the float. By running without a float it would be harder for them to find and pull, if they did find them and pull them it would mean id have to spend more time searching for them as they will be off the GPS mark

Was wondering what everyone else’s experience was? Have they lost a lot of pots in the past and are others constantly pulling them? I've found countless amounts of pots while squidding and never once pulled them, some people just can’t help themselves.

Cheers

Look good , i'de put floats on them , its a pain in the ass to try find and then grappel them, even when the waters clear and shallow so many times ive given up trying to find them.

 String about 10 together

String about 10 together you'll be right no floats they look good! Put one of those little floats you get on yabbie traps on the string (between pots) somewhere so it keeps rope off bottom and it will be easier to grapple.

Float

Good idea with the float, might pick up a couple of the small floats that are sometimes on crab drop nets. Don't mind diving down for them but not that keen to jump over when fishing solo.

probably would help , i usually only string 4 or 5

swimming down on them is another option to consider without floats if you struggle

to get the occy's out

Sat, 2016-12-17 08:10

I dont want to teach you how to suck eggs and assume you know the easy way to get the buggers out of the pot the easy way. But, if you dont. Just sprinkle some table salt on it and he will come a running outa that tube real fast like........I used to take one of those big plastic Saxa salt bottles out with us.

Good luck catching..

 I'm certainly no Occy

I'm certainly no Occy expert,  you really need to be channelling Little Johnny here the Occy "whisperer" on here for the do's and don'ts but one thing with your design i reckon you'll need more holes to get the water out faster...

Camo never goes outa style!

If you are putting them in anything less than say 10 metres ( recommend you do , 2-3 metres more than enough) we always

camo paint ours in green , blue stripes , cause on clear days that white pvc can be seen for miles.( and dudes do look as you stated).

We have tried floats , no float /rope  , free diver single pots , hooker diving strings etc etc, and each has its good/ bad points , so its up to you really.

good luck.

Cheers everyone, I was going to paint them black but last time I was out I could easily pick someone else's pots while squidding. But hey, it's got to be better then white! Camo colour sounds good though.

Little Johnny certainly is an occy guru, I've seen a fair few of his posts and always kills it.

Heard that salt works well and also fresh water (once the pot has drains). Might chuck a few more holes in and give them a paint :)

To save a few bucks i would also get rid of the clips cause if they do get pulled they will probably go missing.

Side holes

What would you suggest Notorious, No drainage holes at all? Have you caught more occys from pots with no drain holes?
