Nutsert/rivnut tool
Submitted by Marineboy on Sat, 2014-10-18 11:22
does any body on here by chance have a tool for installing nutserts I could borrow.
The size mandrel it needs to have is m5.
Preferably NOR but beggars can't be choosers.
Thanks.

You might be able to hire one. The pnuematic one's are awesome but really need to know how to use them. I know there are manual one's too.

If I was going to to that job
If I was going to to that job, I'd get a hi-tensile bolt (threaded all the way to the head) and a plain nut. Then find a sleeve or bush with a 5mm hole that the bolt would pass through, and the outside dia as big as the flange of the riv-nut.
Screw the nut all the way onto the bolt, next slide the sleeve on, and then screw the riv-nut onto the bolt, making sure the bolt passes a little way through the riv-nut. The thread should be lubricated where the nut will wind down.
Insert the riv-nut in the hole, hold the head of the bolt with a spanner to stop it from turning as well as holding it firm in the hole, wind the nut down with a spanner. This should collapse the riv-nut and set it in place.
In the earlier years, riv-nuts had a tang moulded into the flange. We used another tool to notch out a slot that the tang fitted into to stop it from turning when in use.

What is this project that
What is this project that requires blind fasteners? You will curse if and when the time comes to removing the screws and the riv-nuts turn. Might be just as easy to use aluminium pop rivets and drill them out each time.

Project
Yes, I think with this many posts and 500 + reads, we should get a full report on project. If not much guts to it, just tell a few white lies and make it an interesting read.
