North Island NZ fly fishing guide

 Hi all

We're heading to Auckland area in January for 2 weeks and I'd like to go trout fishing for a day or two. Does anyone know of any operators in that general area?

Cheers

Not much on offer around the Auckland area

Thu, 2023-11-30 15:10

but if you're prepared to travel 2.5-3.5hrs south, you'll be in the zone.
Here is a link for you to look at. The main areas of interest to you would be Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Central North Island, Taupo, Turangi.

Hi Timboom

I have used Peter Scott from www.blazingpaddles.co.nz/fly-fishing/ A guide with a lot of knowledge on the local waters and experience. Might be worth a try. No idea of his current costs.

Got a day booked with a guide by the name of Cory Scott. We're going to fish the rivers around Opotiki which is around 3 1/2 hours SE of Auckland. It looks like stunning country and he asid they are fishing really well at the moment. A look at his social media tells me he gets onto some great fish and the feedback is that he's an awesome guy. I'll be getting very twitchy by next month! Hopefully I'll have something worthy of a report by the end of the month!

Hi Alan I saw that when I put it into maps. The guide said 3 1/2 hours so maybe it's soemweher in the middle. We might drive down and stay the night before rather than get up before the crack of dawn to get there. It's all about having a good time and that includes the drive!

Coromandel Peninsula

Mon, 2023-12-18 16:31

You could do a lot worse than doing a leisurely circuit of the Coromandel Peninsula on the way down if you have time. It's a nice part of the world. It will be busy in Jan though. I lived in Tauranga, about 130kms up the coast from Opotiki, towards Auckland, prior to relocating to Oz in 1980.

The Coromaandel is stunning Alan, we have friends that own a batch at Cook's beach. Have been there and fished off shore for some stonking Pinks and of all things big Gurnard.

It's a small world Rob

My mother worked for A&G Price in Auckland around the late 1950s and / or perhaps early 60s. She was a Burroughs bookkeeping machine operator, a skill she had learned from the family business in England pre-WWII.

ha it is, I started in Auckland on ships 1980, they closed in 82 and shunted us remaining apprentices (3) to Thames and nicknamed us the Auckwackers.

Was a fantastic apprenticeship as we were treated as tradesmen and straight on the big machinery doing Clyde Dam projects.

3 yrs ago Thames closed down sadly but I believe the machine shop has reopened

Thanks Andy I'm really looking forward to it. Just the opportunity to spend a day doing something that you just can't really do here. Might have to dust off the saltwater fly gear to get some casting practice!
