No boat no worries

With the wind finally looking to be down on Saturday morning, the original plan was to punch out for a fish in the boat..... In the end, I was too lazy and got out of bed a bit late so opted to just go for a beach bash instead. Driving through town looked like every man and his dog were heading out in the boats so glad I missed the commotion at the ramps!

Back down to the beach with a small shovel to collect some ghosties and straight into it. Was pretty slow for the first hour but then started to turn on. The bluebone takes are very distinct. A premature strikes to try and keep the fish from burying me straight in the reef so didn't manage to set hooks and was cursing myself. Shortly after, got the hookup on a good fish but completely straightened hook with my drag at full lock. New hook and back into it, getting a medium size fish shortly after. Adamant this fish was too small to be the culprit, I was back out there for another crack. Shortly after again, a huge take and I was convinced I must have been back onto the same fish. Plenty of close calls during the fight with the constant feeling of the leader on reef but eventually managed to drag the fish to the beach.... This hook had only just held on also!

Quick pack-up and back home for a 2.5hour round trip. Wouldn't dream of making that time for a boat mission so in the end, it paid to be lazy! Shot out to Bundegi for a dip around lunch time and the ramp was absolute chaos.

A few good feeds there, good job LB.

I had a bad run on Gammakatsu hooks breaking a few years back, pretty much stick with Mustad, BKK, Owner and Harbour and havn't had any hook problems.

Well done, have straitened hooks on decent sharks but not on a fish, good effort landing them.

Awesome! Just out of curiosity, what sort of strength line and leader do you need for these guys?

I am running 30lb braid and roughly 2m of 100lb leader. Ive lost a few fish when under tension if the braid touches the reef at all, it's game over.

100lb leader seems to stand up fine though as long as the braid never touches. Admittedly the hooks are probably a little light given I am fishing with the drag full lock. Great hooks for chasing spangoes but I think I will stick to the BKKs for bluebone from now on.
