Newby-want to fish at exmouth

Hi All

Decided we wanted to go to Exmouth and while searching for info, found the site & joined up.

Currently live in Canberra (you bxxtards sent the politicians so don't blame us) Smile Getting pretty close to retiring.

Done a bit of game fishing & bottom bouncing. Got a 6metre Carribean Reefrunner (old one) 200hp Mercruiser set up for gamefishing. Normally fish out of Bermagui NSW.

Have a smaller 4.55 metre alloy with 50hp honda 4 stroke for travelling long distances. (Took it to Cape York). Took the Reefy up to Queensland but its not suitable for beach launching or across the rocksCry

Have stayed out on the outer reef off the whitsundays in Queensland in the Reefy. Camped on Hook Island for 6 weeks with the reefy moored out the front.

Have LOTS of questions. Smile

Whats the story with the points I see when I log in.

Whats the rules for the fishing comp (like the sound of it so far as long as its not too serious)

When is the best time both fish & weather wise?

We will be camping so are there preferred Caravan parks/spots at Exmouth.

Will the camp grounds handle dogs? (if we don't take the dog we become time limited Cry )

On the way up from Perth (yep at this stage its drag the boat from Canberra probably the little one) are there other places worth a look.

I keeping with all fisherman I really hope I am making you green with envy Tongue outLaughing

the points is representative of your posts........

the rules are easy and the comp is a social gathering with entry fees going to support prizes for each category (species) and its sportfishing orientated with length and photo evidence as opposed to "dead' weight.

Adam Gallash is the site man and he will provide further details if you PM. Or search the threads as there are numerous posts on the exi comp in may next year.

best time to fish is generally april/may but everyone has there preference but dont forget summer is cyclone season but often produces very calm, albeit, very hot weather.

camping is easy and Yardie homestead allows dogs but i stand corrected if this is an error.

plenty of options on way up and this is primarily determined by travel time. let us know your timeline

Also always good to fill in your member profile so it gives us an idea how to align our answers....

Welcome

Welcome to the site. There are 4 caravan parks in Exmouth,as Damo mentioned,Yardie creek[down the west side near Tantabiddi boat ramp,20-25k from town],Lighthouse[near the top of the cape on west side,15k from town]and the other 2 are right in town.I think one of the two in town allows dogs.
The town and Bundegi ramps are quite good[Bundegi can give trouble with the wind from the east]and at Tantabidi you have to watch the tides.
On your way up there are lots of spots worth a try, when the time gets closer stick another entry on the site and i'm sure you will be given plenty of advice on where to go.

Hi Bernie,

Damo has pretty much covered it mate.  Yardie does allow pets (90% sure), Lighthouse is probably the best if you are here purely for fishing as its inbetween the two popular boat ramps.  A decision you can make depending upon your time constraints.

April - June are the best times, but we have chosen May for the comp as its out of school holidays and is generally good weather.  The comp is really up to you, last year some guys fished 16 hours straight and had little luck, whilst others went out for 3 hours and won prizes.  What you want to do, how you want to fish is completely upto you, but for $20 each, its no real loss if you want to sleep in etc etc.  There will still be random prizes to be won.  Last year I got more value out of sitting down and having a cuppa with a member and picking his brains, got lots of years of info in a coupla hours!

Anyway, anymore questions mate, just ask and welcome to the site.

Cheers,

Adam

Thanks for the welcome.

While i sit here contemplating when to go, i flicked through some of the trips.

Its dark, rainy & cold here (about 8 deg outside). The trip to the montebellos almost makes me cry.

I now filled in my profile (didn't see it when i first signed up Embarassed )and will hunt up some piccies to put up.

One other question I should have asked is what the Marlin fishing is like? What (if you do get them) species and what size?

cheers

Bernie
