New Federal Government Fishing Regulations, Ban On Mako shark fishing Petition
Hello Everybody, we have been astounded to learn that from 31st January 2010, 3 Sharks (Longfin Mako, Shortfin Mako & Probeagle) will be added to the same list as the Great White. Can all fisho's please get behind this as this could be the first of many nails in the "recrational fishing Coffin" who knows, maybe your favorite species will be next on the list........maybe sampsons?, GTs?, Barra?, Red Emperor???
I wanted to draw your attention to this important petition that I recently signed: "Ban the ban on new Federal Government Fishing Legislation" http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/governmentfishingbans/ I really think this is an important cause, and I'd like to encourage you to add your signature, too. It's free and takes just a few seconds of your time. Thanks!
Please email this link to all your fishing contacts, we need to show "the powers that be" that when the fisherpeople stand united we cant easily be walked over or pushed aroound!!!!!

I'm sorry but I can't
I'm sorry but I can't understand what is so bad about the 3 species being taken off the list.
To suggest that samsons, GT's and barra etc will one day be taken off the list also is a little bit ambitous I would have thought.
Anyway, just my opinion, guess people need to have a think about what drove the powers to be to make such a decision, and how these changes will affect them.

in Responce to dd83wa
Gday, firstly I was over in WA in august last year to go on a fishing Charter to the montebello islands (ive never seen anything so amazing in my life, scenery, and fishing). I am from South west victoria, and the ammount species that we have on offer here is incredibly low in comparison to WA. especially if your an avid game fisher person. The Short fin mako is a shark that is prolific in our waters and provides amazing revenue for a number of takle shops and townships between
Melbourne and Adelaide.
In my opinion fishing will be and is heading down the same path as hunting and shooting. Its getting harder and harder to to keep the greens happy . Evenconsidering in 1 way or another most serious fisher people are conservationists in there own rights, I know i practise Catch/Tag and release and always look after the environment that we are all so lucky to be able to use for this great past time
I use some of your species as an example ( and i hope that they never get questioned) but i never thought our magnificent Mako would of either.
If you would like to read some fact on this issue ill put up a link to a Victorian Fishing forumn if your interested
I guess I was just appealing to any people from your part of the country to put some numbers behing a cause that is Extreamly important to the recreational fihing in our part of the country.
Thanks
Dancer

what the.....?
How did you conclude that you have less species to target than we do? I personally think that a fairly silly comment to make. We certainly dont get makos in big numbers like you do, wild trout, SBT, a more "local" and "accessible" billfish fishery - gees, I could go on and on.
I personally dont ever do petitions - online or otherwise, but best of luck with it. I have no idea what shape your mako fishery is in, but future sustainability of many, many fish are requiring the imposition of tighter and tighter restrictions and I think that is going to be part of fishing life as we soldier on into the future.

Ban on Makos
I'm not sure that people are aware as to why the ban on catching makos is about to be introduced. You need to read thru all the material. It is not because this species is under threat in Australia it is because Australia is a signatory to the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). See below.
"RECREATIONAL fishing for mako sharks in Australia will be banned - despite the species being common off our coast - because of efforts to save an entirely separate population of the sharks in the Mediterranean.
Australia is a signatory to an international treaty designed to protect endangered animals around the globe.
The UN-sponsored Convention on Migratory Species is in the process of listing several sharks, including short-finned makos, for complete protection.
Short-finned mako numbers have plunged in the Mediterranean Sea and the Eastern Atlantic Ocean.
Under Australia's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act it is prohibited to "kill, injure or take" members of a listed migratory species in Commonwealth waters.
A spokesman for Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett said yesterday the protection order would take effect in January.
But a respected fisheries scientist said yesterday any Australian ban was "mystifying - there is no biological sense to it. There is no evidence of any connection between the populations of makos in the Mediterranean and the short finned makos off the Australian coast," Dr Julian Pepperell said.
"Makos just don't move between Australia and the Med. Banning fishing here will do absolutely nothing to help the makos there.
"This situation seems to be the result of a loophole where, if a species is listed in trouble anywhere in the world, and is listed as migratory, protective measures apply to all signatory countries."
Mr Garrett's spokesman could not explain how an Australian ban would aid Mediterranean mako sharks.
Dr Pepperell, a marine fisheries consultant who specialises in large open water fish, said makos were a popular target for recreational anglers.
"There is a fishing competition in Sydney which sees more than 50 makos tagged and released each year," he said.
"I suspect they're as common as they ever were off NSW."
There are already fishing bans in Australia for great whites and grey nurse sharks."

Sorry Guys
This was not meant to turn into a debate, only a simple requsest to get as many people behind the 1 cause, The government has now placed these species as protected even thought they are prolific in our waters. The conservation of migratory species (CMS) have listed these sharks as "threatened" because of dwindling stocks in the medateranian sea, 99.9% of the reason is because they havent done the right thing because of commercialy over fishing.
The other issue I have is that Peter Garret and his band of merry men didnt speak to the Gamefishing bodys in Australia (of which i am a member) to ask our thoughts and opinions on fish stocks and ways to protect numbers of the sepecies.
I hope this clarifies it a little better
Alot of people from the east coast are up in arms about this
your will get more info from the following link
http://www.makofishingaustralia.com.au/
but this link has only been up and going in the last 24 hours so there is still alot of information to be added to it
Thanks Dancer

Thanks Dancer, having grown up in NSW and visit regularly, I know how prolific the Mako's are over there. I have signed the petition and forwarded it on to some of my fishing mates in southern NSW.
