Navionics charts

Ok, I've got navionics platinum on my tub.  When I bought it, it came with a genuine navionics SD card reader.

I've plugged this into my PC and nothing's happened.  You can't look at the charts or anything.  I then read, that trying to access your charts on your PC can erase your card and its not covered by warranty (thankfully this didn't happen to me!).

am I doing something wrong? Should I be able to look at my charts on my laptop?  I just don't want to have to sit in the boat in the driveway every time I feel like casting an eye over possible new ground.

cheers for your help in advance.

I can't help with the SD card reader but if you just want a quick look at some charts they have a free online version here: http://www.navionics.com/en/webapp

Cheers!!,  that's awesome.  Not exactly what I'm after, but still a massive help.  Saves going to the boat just to look over charts.

Spare cable

I don't think the cards will work on your laptop otherwise everybody could just copy them for their mates. I have a seperate power/data cable that I use which I connect to a c-tek charger as a 12v supply so I can muck around with the sounder down in the shed.

 Yeah, in know they are

Yeah, in know they are protected from copying.  Otherwise, like you said, they'd just get copied all the time.

so how do people back up their marks to pc?  I've had this sounder for almost a year, but haven't even contemplated looking at it all until now.

In fact, I'm only just starting to experiment with it in the last month.  Next on my agenda is fine tuning the sounder.

most reliable way-bring up

most reliable way-bring up your waypoints page and photograph it.

Sitting in the boat scanning for new ground-I enjoy it, a beer, stereo on, in the dark and chilling out!

Navionics program

Wed, 2013-03-13 16:19

If you have brought the charts you can plug the sd card into your computer. Most laptops have an SD card slot. From what I read online it is only cards pre 2007 that will wipe if tried to access on a computer.

From there you can go onto the navionics website, download the pc program (which will update your charts) and also allow you license 5 computers to view the charts on. I think it is called the Navionics PC App 8.

I don't know how to backup up waypoints sorry but you are meant to be able to do it with this program.

I use it all the time to scout out areas we are going to and mark distances and routes for fuel calculations

Don't try copy the data off the card though as you will waste your time. They have copywrited that card very well.

Ahhh ok,  perhaps it's because I'm trying it on a mac...  I think I'll try it on my work laptop, may work a little better.

Thanks for the help.

alternatively you can get the navionics app on your smart phone (android or iphone) it cost about $14 but once you have you got it for life plus its is for all of aus and nz. gives you tides, winds and shares spots other people have uploaded. i use it all the time when wondering where to head to next, mostly when im at work.
i've also had to use it as my gps when my hds5 cooked itself the other week. so till i get that back on warranty im using my phone
