My rant on my find.

Went to In a loo fish shop yesterday. They had Black Bream, alot of them around 25-35cm. This i did not have an issue with. What i did have an issue with was the Bream sitting in the middle on the ice. It was around 3kg or more and 60-65cm. It was so big and old looking it didnt look like a Bream. Its width was around 4 inches. Why? Frigin why? the things is probably 30-40 years old or more. It is gonna taste like crap. Put it back. Why does some dickhead feel it has to go to a fish shop. I cant stand all these people that take all these huge fish and yes Jewfish, Pinkys, Baldchin all those. Fish in W.A are on such low numbers its un real.

The ones that look like your grandparents on your wifes side. Why take them. There the breeders. Take the younger healthy fish that are of a decent size. Not the Pinky with the ball like a baseball sticking out of its head so you can take a picture and show it to ya mates, only to then eat it, and find the 40cm Pinky you had the week before was way better and you have just wasted it. Take your picture and put the thing back. Take the middle size ones. And take your limit and im sure most of you take your limit all the guys here seem fantastic. Im talking about the ones that arnt!

Thats my rant. If it gets me into trouble i dont care. Im passionate about the state of W.As fish stocks and so on.

Thank you.

Comes down to money really.

Sun, 2011-11-06 23:18

Comes down to money really. The bigger older fish will get the fisherman more money which is what he is after. The more profit he can make the better, doesnt make it right but thats the facts about commersal fishing.

Taking the bigger fish can also be linked back to money as people spend their money in going to find these fish and if they can get 10kilo's worth of fish then 3kilo's for their money why wouldn't they? I agree that the big older fish should be released but it's not going to happen. It's up to the fisherman/women thats catches the fish to make the disition not other people so in the end it's there call.

1st of all u need to consider

Sun, 2011-11-06 23:22

1st of all u need to consider the way the bream were caught. Maybe it was a commercial boat that netts the bream, and this bream was well and truley dead before it was landed and would have been a waste to throw it back.

secondly its commercial and not recreational, and the amount of bream comming in must have been in the hunderds, if not thousands, and im pretty sure the workers dont look at every bream individualy and assess whether or not they are breeders.

im not 100% certian about the facts, these are all my opinions, so until we have some solid facts, we shouldn't jump to conclusions.

thirdly i wouldnt be eating a 40cm pinky, cause thats undersize. :)

Other POV is that these bigger fish have already contributed considerably to the gene pool, are at the latter stages of there life and their death, whilst tragic, is really a bit like a new male lion eating cubs. I am not a hypocrit and I think if most people jump on this bandwagon whilst on this site then they probably are - otherwise we would not have POTM. Whilst many of us fish to get a feed, it is the one that got away that keeps us coming back, same with anyone that hunts. Great call on the grandparents though!!

my son got a nice 25cm black

Mon, 2011-11-07 08:46

my son got a nice 25cm black bream yesterday at Freo Boat lifters while I was working on the tub and he said " Dad we should let him grow to be a breeder"

thats from a 11 year old. who put back his only fish of the day.

As for selling big old fish, it's all about the money...

Why take your limit??

Wed, 2011-11-09 14:18

I know the limits are tight, but sometimes taking your limit because you can irritates me. Take enough for a couple of feeds is all we need. I personally dont ever take our limit up here in Dampier, but we fish for a feed, not the freezer. I dont go out to get the bragging right "I caught my bag load" but to enjoy fishing, the serenity, the battle with a fish, the sport of it and the relaxation. I do take a feed, but have never aimed at bagging out.

The only time I recall having a limit was when we struck it very lucky in 15m of Water and caught 6 Red emperor. The last 2 was huge compared with the other 4 in the esky and they swam away happy. So did the very very lucky 65cm trout that was caught after we had 2 reds onboard. I like reds better, so it was released (this would not happen ever if there are no reds, as it is my second favourite).

We had enough for a few good and yum feeds, but not enough to fill the freezer. It was a red letter day with all sorts of NW snaps etc coming onboard, but we only kept 1 Spangly (first fish caught), because then we got a red. All the rest went back and it gave us a great excuse for going out again, which IMO is what fishing is about.

I got totally pissed off one day when 3 chaps on the ramp showed me their catch. It was bagged out with reds, trout, Rankins and Seaperches (Saddles and scarlies) and I felt disgusted at the sight. When asked to show our esky I proudly showed the 2 trout we had, and commented that it was a great feed and we would be out again next week. The Mrs went off at them and told them in clear "Australian" english about how many C&R's we had caught.

Bagging out might be for some, but I consider that still as rape and pillage. I would be out fishing even if there was a no take on fish, because its what I love, not necesarry the catch. But there is nothing wrong with a feed or 2 because it is beautiful tasting, and bloody good for you.

Just didnt like the comment "And take your limit and im sure most of you take your limit"

This is my opinion only and not posted to cause a rage.

Crasny if i lived in Dampier

Wed, 2011-11-09 15:45

Crasny if i lived in Dampier and was more or less sure of a feed when i went out i would take just that ,a feed. Try fish down this way and you can go a couple of trips without any keepers so if we have a good day i will take my bag because i love to eat fish. With work commitments strong winds and the fact i can get out maybe once a month it would probably add up to what you take over a month by going out weekly.Has a lot to do with where you fish and how abundant they are, would love to fish out of Dampier once a week i would be in clover. No rage here mate just that every situation is different. Tight lines mate. Getting back to the Bream, biggest i have seen would have been around 57 cm taken from Nornalup released well along with a heap of others that day.Once i found out how slow growing they are gave up keeping any at all.

Yes mate you are correct and I didnt think off it that way. Perhaps should have aimed it more at the freezer-fillers up here.

And yes I see the point and taken on the chin.

big bream

Fri, 2011-11-11 10:04

when i was 15 i caught a bream over 3kg and 60cm at the causeway on a live river prawn caught the night before, and back then i didnt take a photo but the tail stuck way out of a 20l bucket, ive never seen one close to that size since and ive caught quite a few over 2kg since it was a beast of a fish. ive also fished twice at lake clifton (ssshhh!!!) a few years ago with mulies and beach rods after salmon fishing and we caught and released some stonkers well over 2kg but nothing like the one from the causeway 22 years ago.   60cm+ do exist ive caught one!.    i also caught a bartail flathead at the causeway on a 15cm live bony herring(out for mulloway) that was well over 60cm and i released that so hopefully its still around, that thing was a freak!!!  cheers

The black bream are very tolerant of salt, even hypersaline evnironments.

One of the lakes down in esperance was twice as salty as seawater and heaps of bream over 40, even 50cm, when we were kids.
