My Car! My Car!! OMG My Car!!!!

I was crossing (trying to) the Narrows this arvo on the way into the city and got smacked by this huge hailstorm. No bullshit, those stones wree the size of cricket balls. I ended up with a smashed front windscreen and irrpairable damage to the roof, bonnet and the side of my beloved 4x4. So what to do next? What will the insurance company say???

How much other damage is out there? I see there is a structural calamity and the Jacob's ladeder region.

One thing is for sure, my beloved 4x4 got me home. A lot better result than a lot of other small car owners out there .

My street had water 2ft deep. The next street over(paralell to mine) had a car upto the door handles with the opposite side street having 4 cars in the same sh^t. The local hoons told us of a street that had water over the bonnet of their jacked up landcruiser. Also know of some family members with smashed with windscreens and panel damage.

I got one ding in my roof but when I saw the size of the hail I ran for cover at innalloo cinema under the overhang was the 1st there lucky me had best spot and the show only one ding and a medium ding  nice to own a 4x4 in this weather the aurion would never have made it home. Hows everyones boat ? I cant see any damage but the hail must have hurt it ? maybe I cant see it ? Everyones boat survive OK ? (and I was going to pick up my covers on friday crap)

Hospital trip

Tue, 2010-03-23 08:16

No house or car damage but ended up at hospital with my son (11) after we went to the outlaws for dinner. They lost power just as we got there so the kids decided to play murder in the dark (almost literally). My son was picked up by an older cousin and thrown over the new white leather lounge and smashed his head on the coffee table.

Blood everywhere as is typical with head wounds. Ended up being a small laceration to the back of his head which got glued but could have been much worse.

 BLOODY KIDS!

Mother in law not impressed either. Most of the blood ended up on her new lounge!!!!

Hope no one else had any injuries.

dude i was on the narrows at the same time

work ute is pretty much a write off I'd say, there would be hundreds and hundreds of dents on the roof, bonnet, side, back tail gate, smashed mirrors, tail lights the whole lot.

That was mental, and the wind that was howling across the narrows was insane.

1 hail stone hit the mirror and got stuck in it, no sh!t it was 1/3 of the size of the mirror!!!!

Sure was not the place to be Bodie

I anticipate my 4x4 will be a write-off as there is far too much damage to the roof, bonnet and passenger side panels to warrant repairing it given the cost against its market value. Unlike a lot of people I am quite upset as I like my car.

Once I got off the Narrows by surfing a foot deep ice blanket I was confronted with a wall of water coming down the f/way from Parliament house. Lucky I was in a 4x4 I recon as small cars were being tossed around a bit.

At Osborne Park I was sure I was struck by lightening as the second front went through. Man it was a crazy experience.

It's going to take some while to get a claim in as the RAC web site has died and their phone system is understandably chockers.

We were very

lucky, took some photos of the front garden, 4x4 looked like it had flat tyres, water up to the wheel nuts and have water mark on tyres this morning, also took some fantastic shots of the sunset from the back yard last night, as we are at the end of a hill in our street, never seen in 14yrs half full storm water drain.  First time ever kicked off my wireless INTERNET as the storm was coming, absolutely played havoc with the digital signal for the TV and no mobile signal for about 2hrs,  Old fart pushed the boat out from under the car port to get a good clean hahahah, it nearly fainted as it hadn't been wet in quite a few months.  Thank good we havent got a black out as the freezer in the laundry is full of prawns, squid, fish, crayfish and all meats to go away with.

Just hope you all ok and no lives lost, as you can replace cars etc but not lives.

It will be interesting to see what the insurance company policy on this will be. Most cars I have seen that were hit by the hail have a serious amount of dents on their roofs.

well ours will be written off

there would be atleast 500+ dents, and not just in the roof, bonnet, but in the doors, and side bars.... couldnt believe that part of the car could actually get damaged by hail.

Every panel except 2 doors needs to be replaced... surely a write off.

25000 Phone calls in a day

Tue, 2010-03-23 19:13

It was only a car - how no one lost their lives is utterly amazing - cars and carpets and ceilings can and will be replaced - you cannot do that with people

Get it into true perspective !!

And as for the 100 mill toted as the likely damage bill - after 40 years in the game that is way short - the number was the calls we received today - one insurer - one car yard alone sustained way of 3 mill - as I said - put it in perspective be patient be patient be patient if you have lodged a damage claim - and only press IF it is for life and limb otherwise take your turn PLEASE

OK Ok Sunshine LOL

Tue, 2010-03-23 20:53

I do respect your problems in dealing with such an influx of calls. I have been trying patiently to lodge a claim since last evening. My car is a MESS!!! I NEED HELP LOL. Trying to lodge a claim online was my best bet as the phone lines were understandably chockers. It took me most of the day online as the "coockies" kept timing out.

I guess the "true perspective" here is that 1. if my windows caved in on the Narrows, I would have been pounded by missiles and hit from behind from those who could not have seen me and 2. I would not have been able to go to work and have no chance of compensation for the loss of income. Insurance companies charge big bucks.. they need to be able to respond.

I wont start a debate but

Wed, 2010-03-24 06:51

Even the most basic of examinations of insurers profits over the last ten years would reveal the ONLY big bucks they made was from investment as loss ratio's have hovered around 100%

And don't blame insurers for a Telstra phone system that literally melted down before 9.00am as so many people sought to lodge claims.

Most badly hail damaged vehicles will be written off - client;s who were prepared to go to a central assessment centre we set up kbnew within perhaps an hour whether theirs qualified as total or otherwise and will have their money within days.

Homes with wet carpets is a different matter - and even glass repairs - I note no mention of the fact that the largest glass repairer in WA was talking replacement next week at the earliest.  As usual the typical insurance company beat up - wake up to yourselves !

FYI For people still without power

Wed, 2010-03-24 08:20

You may want to pass this on to anyone who might have been without power for at least 12 hours straight in the recent storms. Under Clause 19 of the Electricity Industry (Network Quality and Reliability of Supply) Code 2005, anyone who was without power for more than 12 hours straight is entitled to an Extended Outage Payment of $80 from Western Power. The claim can be done online at:

http://www.westernpower.com.au/mainContent/yourPowerSupply/extendedOutage/EOPS_Claim_Form.html

In addition, you can claim some damage for loss of fridge and freezer food or for electrical damage from Western Power but only if it was a failure of their equipment, not say if it was caused by lightning etc. People should check out the following info to see if their circumstances qualify:

http://www.westernpower.com.au/documents/forms/customer_damage_report.pdf

The forms can also be mailed in if people prefer to:

Reply Paid 83021
Locked Bag 2504
Perth WA 6001

There is no need for a stamp as it’s a reply paid address.

Claims must be received within 60 days of the date power is restored.

time to buy a 4kva genset

Wed, 2010-03-24 08:32

time to buy a 4kva genset from china meee thinks...

We had also invested in a dozen $10 tarps from one of the cheapo hardware stores in Midlands in case we got any leaks and needed to protect furniture.
Call us paranoid, but many people still live with the "
she be allright mate" and come short.
Being a boyscout is scoffed at when you " be prepared", but those from cyclone areas or regions know for heavy violent thunder storms know better...

Like the fools on motorcycles in the rain and hail, your lifes not worth it mate. Park it and take a taxi or train or sit it out.

-some little things to keep for a hail storm kit.
two or three old blankets ( for the car windscreen and roof) makes a huge diff.
-a dozen cheap tarps to cover TV's etc and expensive furniture etc..
-having masking tape to tape across windows damaged to prevent them from falling in and too peaces.
- having a pair of leather gloves to handle glass and sharp stuff.
-parking close to a wall and with your front windscreen pointing away from the storm. basic, but many did not do this.
-taking your sunshade out of your car and putting it under your windscreen wipers will help lessens the impacts. ( don't risk your life doing this, but if you see it's coming, make a plan!)

just a few pointers, some how I have a feeling this is not the last of the big bad thunder cells we going to see this year.

Sunshine, tone it down a bit mate. No ones going off their tree at anyone...they are talking about the damage they copped in a storm which they are quite welcome to do so. Take a deep breath or a stiff drink or drive your hopefully non-dented car down to the beach and throw a line in...its a good day for it!Smile

thats exactly what I'm going to do this weekend...lol
waste bait and look at the sea... :)

Just freaked me out how people around me at work just ignored the weather warnings and then cried like babies the next day saying they never knew...

The weather boys got this one spot on, warning as far as 36 hrs before about the risk of bad storms and by 1pm they again called it a bad one with people laughing it off at my work.
Till it hit town like a freight train!

LoL, I was one of the fools on a motorbike.

Wed, 2010-03-24 09:41

I was on my way for a fish at shelley bridge when it all started to unfold. Just started to get belted by golf ball size hail as i arrived, frantically tried to park, and ran for the cover of riverton bridge. LoL,still fished for an hour though! (one undersize bream) The ride to a mates place half way home was something Ill never forget. The muffler was underwater  a dozen times between canningvale and huntingdale. Sorry to all those whose front lawn i rode over, and hi to all the people that waved and laughed as I made my way along the Rivers Edge lol. Fair dinkum, that was stupid,I should have stayed under the bridge.

we had 50k worth of damage

Wed, 2010-03-24 12:38

i live next to kings park and our house is the lowest on the street...all the water went from kings park, across the road, into our driveway and banked up 1m high in our front garden, inside our house, and also in our back garden...our one car is a writeoff, the other not so bad - everything has to be gutted from the lower level of our house, including floorboards, kitchen, laundry, loungeroom etc.... also garage was so flooded that boat came off the trailer and was floating when we opened the garage door.

not much fun!
