mulla

i couldnt help but notice how many people are keen to catch a mulla on here, thinking of giving it a crack myself as it seems that it would be a very rewarding and great achievement. i just wanted to know if anyone actually eats them as they are good on the chew or whether its more just the fact of actually catching one? Cheers

over about 70 od cm they are beautiful to eat :) anything less usauly has a soapy taste, thus the little ones are called soapies. over about 1.2m they start getting a bit tough and bland, but still better then tailor, herring, flatys etc.

Flatties are to die for. IMO way better than Mulla, but we all have different tastes. Some love mullet, I boil them in milk and pass it to the people I dont like.

Great table fish

Wed, 2012-01-11 10:10

In NSW they call them Jew Fish. Some of the top seafood restaurants have Jew Fish cutlets as a top of the menu item. Pan fried in butter. A great dish!

Wed, 2012-01-11 10:28

Mulloway tastes ok if they are not too small but honestly why would you want to eat one when there are many other better eating fish (like flathead) that you can catch easily? IMO all mulloway should be released after a few quick photos.

Why would I want to eat one???

Wed, 2012-01-11 10:44

Becuase they are a great table fish and I spend many an hour trying to catch one. If I restrict my diet to Flathead then I wouldn't be eating much fish and certainly wouldn't be fishing where I do now.

I spend my share of hours

Wed, 2012-01-11 11:11

I spend my share of hours trying to catch mulloway to Trigger but I choose to only do if for the sport of it. That's my choice & I don't expect everyone to share my views. If you want to keep a mulloway or two for the table then I don't see anything wrong with that, I just think there are better options for a feed out there & enjoy seeing a magnificent fish like a mulloway returned to the water. Like I said, it's only MY opinion.

Flatties and Mulloway are two of my favourite eating fish, but i will take a mulloway fillet/steak over a flatty anyday. I had 16kg odd to experiment with once, and whatever i did with it tasted absolutely beautiful!

Never tried mulloway so can't

Wed, 2012-01-11 11:50

Never tried mulloway so can't comment on that, was more directed at rating flathead alongside shite like tailor and herring. (IMO of course)

I rate flathead up there with some quality fish, love the flavour and texture

Wed, 2012-01-11 11:36

I have been chasing them for the past 6-8months spent alot of hours trying diffrent things with only few runs and not even sure if it was a mulla. its something i have been dreaming to catch landbased and may even keep one if its the right size but im in it to fulfill the dream rather then for food, reckon to chase them for a feed youll be hungry more often than not.

Maybe that's why some rate eating them so highly Abz. Things always seem better if you have to work hard for them.

Quality restaurants don't catch them, they buy them

Wed, 2012-01-11 12:01

It seems people who are able to afford to spend big bucks on a decent feed of Mulla do so because it's a magnificent table fish, not becuase they are hard to catch. The question presented in this thread is about the quality of the fish and not whether we should abstain from eating them for whatever reason.

It's funny how some people classify Tailor and Herring as shit fish. The truth is that there is little better on the chew than a freshly caught Tailor which is probably why a lot of people here take them home. As for Herring, they are extremely tasty and can be cooked in many different ways. My preference is by smoking.

Yes Snappermiles I've eaten

Wed, 2012-01-11 12:27

Yes Snappermiles I've eaten Mulloway a few times. Once that I caught myself, twice caught & cooked by others & once in a melbourne restaurant. I don't know the source of the restaurant one but the others all came from the ocean. It's ok but personally I think there's better out there. It seems people think I'm trying to say that they shouldn't take mulloway to eat when that's not what I'm saying at all. I've simply expressed what I do & what I think, it's not intended to influence anybody one way or the other. I guess people just are not supposed to have an opinion here.

Wed, 2012-01-11 13:53

& you would know people are going by word of mouth how? I know people that reckon Carp & Tench are great eating but you'll be hard pressed to find too many on here that agree. Does that mean they are full of shit to? No it just means thier tastes are different. I make my choices based on my own opinions not the opinions of others. Seems there's people here who don't mind if you have an opinion as long as it's the same as thiers. I guess the saying each to thier own doesn't really mean anything here.

Chriss, I reckon the best thing you can do is catch one over the 70cm mark & try it for yourself. If you like it, great, you have another type of fish to keep for a feed. If you don't like it you can just fish for them for the sport of it. Don't worry about what me or anyone else has to say, make up your own mind when you catch one.

I love eating mulloway, I've

Wed, 2012-01-11 14:04

I love eating mulloway, I've had a couple of crap ones but they were pulled upriver. I would struggle to keep one to eat again as I feel guilty killing a fish older than I am. Sometimes when you spend a hundred hours chasing a fish, you do sort of need the fruits of your labour I guess but I get much more satisfaction letting them go.

The black mulla in my avatar

Wed, 2012-01-11 15:38

The black mulla in my avatar was caught at Dundee Beach NT. weighed 12kg and tasted OK.

The flesh around the tail was a bit stringy but the rest was good. Caught in 12 foot of water and like hooking on to a freight train. What a buzz.

Would much prefer Spanish Mack to chew , however the crew I go with would much prefer bottom fishing for goldies, red ones etc therefore you get your share of dhu.

Mulloway/Black Jews Are Great Fun Regardless

Wed, 2012-01-11 15:41

Mulloway or Black Jews there close northern cousin are great fun to catch and worth the effort whether or not you plan on eating them, Give it a try and maybe keep the first one to eat to gauge you feeling for them. AS for the fishing side you won't regret the experience once you have got one.

To stoke the fire I would take flattie over a Mulloway any day.

jewels are the eardrum bones

Wed, 2012-01-11 18:02

mulloway taste better than tailor or herring, which are better for bait to catch mulloway etc,the jewels are located in the big spine bone at the back of the gills,i havent caught 1 since 2006 which was 16kg,mulloway can be cut into cuttlets, wrapped in foil with onion, garlic, parsley or basil and baked in the oven for 20 minutes and taste delicious, this is how my parents cooked them or you can fillet and batter and fry or even bbq,but this is my oppinion

Personally I think flathead

Thu, 2012-01-12 14:41

Personally I think flathead taste better than mulloway, but have only eaten duskies and blue spotted from over east, not the ones out of swan river. But mulloway are still very nice to eat, usually bbq in cutlets marinated with garlic and chilli paste or beer batter in small chunks.

Gday,

Mulloway are great eating and great catching.......we practically live on it.

I bet I could serve it up to the fussiest fish eaters and they would enjoy it........people have different tastes for sure but I really think a lot of fish comes down to the way its cooked and prepared.

 Mulloway are not considered

Mon, 2012-01-16 12:41

Mulloway are not considered old fish as far as I've read they have a life span of about 30years and grow between 60-80kgs although a 30kg fish is considered a giant in our waters. There's several things that could affect the taste and according to the wild west book they shld be bled as soon as caught and anything other then soapies from the ocean shld taste pretty good if handled well after capture. Some mulloway caught upriver etc tend to taste stringy but the ocean ones they shld taste pretty good even in the giant sizes.

all of this is info I've read, havent personally tasted mulloway.

Now an old fish is bream for their size...
