Frustrating - Rubber Injection System

Sat, 2008-04-26 10:13

A recount of a no doubt very frustrating event OT.

Reminds of many years ago (34!), my two brothers and I were spearfishing (snorkles) around james rocks. I swam over a large rock on the sea bed in only about 3 meters of water and what should be resting hard up in a trench in the sand alongside, but a HUGE mulla (even allowing for underwater magnification).

We all had pathetically small single rubber guns. I swam over to my twin brother, got his attention and swam  him back to the spot. With eyes as big as golf balls he  was convinced my previously water surface gasped storry  wasn't BS. After a quick discussion, we decided we needed the 'fire power' of all three spears and repeated the process with my other brother.

All of us then swam back to the spot. You guessed it, Mulla was gone.

Beautiful Fish

Sat, 2008-04-26 11:50

Yup, no doubt about it OT, they are a beautiful looking fish. I won't forget the image I had in the water. Wished I had an underwater camera at the time.

I have a similar story with a different ending

Sun, 2008-04-27 20:16

When I was young fella I took my nephew fishing at my regular haunt off the rocks at North Curl Curl. It was a real dead flat day. The water was so crystal clear you could see right to bottom. Normally, when it was like that there was no chance of catching anything decent. My young nephew was keen to catch something, so we grabbed some cunjy and tossed it into the only bit of wash we could find.
We landed a few rock cods - which made the young bloke happy and were just packing up when I had a last look in the water. And what do I see - a big school of kingys swimming by. They weren't big in size, hoodlums really. But I thought this is a chance not to be missed. So I grabbed my nephews rod, which was a real kids set-up. Found an old Wonder Wobbler and tossed is at the school. Well they kept swimming straight past it and I thought I was never going to get a hook up when one suddenly turned, charged at the Wonder Wobbler, smashed it and ran. I don't know if many of you remember those first Daiwa spinning reels. They were crap - but this little reel hung in there for quite awhile until the rod snapped in half. Lost the fish, but it was still a great buzz. And my nephew - he wasn't too happy. But I brought him a new and better rod to make up for it.

Annoying

Mon, 2008-04-28 09:46

I reckon the most annoying thing is sight fishing, when you can see a big bugger down there and you see them swim past, nose the bait and keep going, grrrr.

Hi Teenager

It would have been a good catch, but it was just a buzz to hook onto one that day.

Hi Ya,

Wonder if it was the same miserable bugger that taunted my younger brother & I at the Narrows February 2008 (probably not).

We were mulla fishing and the big beauty came swimming by in no less than 600mm of water.  I was using a 10' rod and dangled a bait in front of it's nose every time it swam by (about every 3 or 4 minutes).  By dangled I mean just that.  The rod butt was under my arm pit (OH Pew!!!) and the bait was dangling straight down.  Neither the brother nor I have seen anything like it before.

And, yes, very frustrating.  But both us us, even though we would have loved to hook our first, were actually happy to see it swim away.

Cheers.

Unlucky mate.

Fri, 2008-06-06 11:43

You will get one, one day mate. Just keep praying mate and it will eventually turn your way.

I have had this experience many times mate. Like a school of Salmon were just cruising by but at first I thought it was a weed patch (down deep well not deep 6-10m deep) so I ignored it. As I went through my tackle box to get a softplastic out to rig up for a Herring or two, I looked out to where I was going to cast it and then I notice this patch was like 20m to the right now. As I casted out, my plastic hit the water so I let it sink. As I went to retrieve it, I hooked a Herring then all of a sudden one fish peeled off from the school and was chasing my Herring.

Cheers lads,

Darda. H
