more questions from a young'n

you guys might remember me from my metal slice designs topic. well im back and this time ive got more questions for u old farts out there :P

first up: can anyone recommend me a good selection of lures both hard and soft for bream and flathead?

second: got the twistys in the end but now i feel like getting some SPs for tailor. got suggestions?

thirdly: anyone know good fishing locations for bream, flathead and tailor within the metro region or slightly beyond? if possible i want to avoid locations more than an hour's drive away (i live in bull creek as a reference)

fourth: is there a specific time of day where fish bite best? if so, does it vary between species?

thanks alot folks

EDIT: i'm not into beach fishing, i prefer fishing from rocks or a jetty for the ocean

just walk along the banks

just walk along the banks looking for structure. a baby vibe is a small hard body lure. many of the juniors on here are using them

hey was at maylands the other day fishing or random jettys using basic river rig with and without a sinker caught 13 undersize bream in about 4 hrs...that is including walking time between each jetty and casting inbetween. i havent used soft plastics before but will be trying along there ive heard the brand gulp are one of the better plastics to use.

also saw a 10cm tailor caught :|on prawn at about 4pm

lures for bream if land

Sat, 2010-01-09 07:56

lures for bream if land based i would look at sx 40's and plastics such as berkly bass minnows in pearl water mellon,
tailor on sp's nice way to go through alot of coin as they tear em to shreds better of with small stick baits and poppers like the maria wise dogs and pop queens and also the r2s bubble pop.
bream locations belmont ski area always has bream all year round and some big bream to just walk along th e bank heading down river and you will find some nice snags
time of day : i have got bream all through the day so i just go when ever.
as for baby vibs the only really effective way i have found for them is more of a "teabag" retreive so fish it like a soft plastic not like a standard hard body as it will prove useless , i have found best results to go to yaught clubs at night with them drop them straight down (dont cast) wait till they hit the bottom then slowly lift the rod tip so the vib is "vibing " the n let it drop again not retreiving and just repeat 12 or so times aif you dont get a hit go to the next pylon. when fishing like this braid and locked drags are good cause your playing them so close to structure you need to pull them straight out.
hpe this helps

gday mate ill try answer sll

Sat, 2010-01-09 08:28

gday mate ill try answer sll you questions canning bridge is good place to fish for brim or walk around and find you own littl spot around the river. most fish feed at erly morrnings and sundown so thats when they go on the bite but you can catch fish all day long just need to be in teh rigth spot at the right time. best brim lure is a baby vibe you can find them at any bcf store and you can get berkley deep minnow in the gold and black. now soft plastics im a soft plastics man and i like to use the berkley soft plastics you will notice them they cum in the yellow packet and have alot ov sparkaly bits good for brim and flattys.or you can use gulp doesnt matter what flavour just cala like your not goign to see a sillver and blue bait fish swimming around so just use darkish coulers like browns and dark greens and black with orange that sort of stuff. oh and a spot to go fishing try out the kwinnana beach not the jetty near the power station the horse beach lots of salmon trout and tailor so give it a go privat message me if you need any help on soft plastics.

Tailor...

Sat, 2010-01-09 09:50

...love softies! Trouble is, they get chewed to shreds! Better to stick with metal or a shallow-running bibbed minnow like a Rapala or Laser Pro for them!

Softies really come into their own when you've got fish at the base of rocks, like skippy. You can get the lure right down to them and work it horizontally or vertically, depending on how far you've casted. They will catch virtually anything, but if blowies are about, same problem as with tailor!

One more tip with sp's...unless you get tails with built in action, like a curly tail, you normally have to use a fair bit of rod action on the retrieve. Lots of short twitches and jerks...fish mainly hit them as they're dropping back down to the bottom. And you can't beat a good quality graphite rod and braided line to maximise the lure movement...stretchy mono and "noodly" glass rods aren't able to properly transmit your movements to the lure, and the lack of sensitivity means you'll miss a lot of strikes.

1st--- Baby Vibs, sx40's,

Sat, 2010-01-09 10:11

1st--- Baby Vibs, sx40's, sx48's, switchblade, camion, Cultiva
2nd--- SNAPBACKS. they still get chewed up, but they last 10 times longer. tailor also love hard bodied diving lures, and you can use your bream lures for this. my fav diving lure at the moment are Cultiva's.
3rd--- good place to start with lures are the canning bridge, and the raffles "weedbeds". plenty of bream and flatties and tailor around there.
4th--- fish can bite anytime during the day, but there feeding patterns have more to do with tides and solunar effects.
fisherman1992----- try out some squidypro flickbaits and wrigglers, and snapbacks paddeltails. berkley is ok, but theres far better out there. still love 3' bass minnow in pearl watermelon for practically EVERYTHING around. the gulps in nuclear chicken (and every wacked out colour) work too, as much as you wont beleive.

yep ill say baby vibs,

Sat, 2010-01-09 14:18

yep ill say baby vibs, sx40s, switchblades.

as the faulkner family were saying the strecth between canning bridge and mt henry bridge is a good place to try, look for the snags and dropoffs.

I had a go of that whole area and saw heaps of bream along the way, just they werent hungry:(

with the coulours for lures, look for the more natural colours, greens, browns.

Otherwise if your not sure, just ask the people at the tackle shop, the should tell you what has been doing the damage recently.

Bream at causeway

Fri, 2010-01-15 02:07

Don't know if this will help, but me and a few of my sisters friends went under the causeway on herisson island, on the burswood side, on the pylons (there is a rope to help you get up) and that was a good spot. got about ten just size bream and two big healthy fat ones within 5 minutes between each one of 36cms and 38cms . a bloke fishing there told us every sesion he goes there he gets atleast 1 30+cm bream. We were using peeled river prawns with a light running sinker.

Ashenfall, are you looking

Fri, 2010-01-15 11:10

Ashenfall, are you looking at bait fishing or lure fishing? lure fishing for them is much more of a skill and it makes you more proud (imo) if you get the big one on lure.

I'm more of a lure guy

Fri, 2010-01-15 12:21

even tho i know that baits are easier to use lol

also im not only looking at bream. im pretty much open to every species out there. (except deep sea species of course)

speaking of which leemo ive been browsing through the forums and noticed a couple of posts by you saying that you've been catching plenty of flathead on the canning flats. whereabouts and what time of day?

yes, i did have a great run

Fri, 2010-01-15 19:09

yes, i did have a great run of flatties there, dont know if there still around. only bad thing was they wernt of great size. i got them on every side of the bridge. the raffles weedbeds was most productive, followed by the freeway flats, heading towards mt henry bridge. got them all waist deep in water. time of day didnt seem to bother them, as i got them all through the day. there virtually everywere around there, so its worth a crack.
