Monties in April

Starting to bounce an idea around in my head about heading up to the Monties in my boat for part of the April school holidays.

I know there's a few crew on here who have done it on recreational vessels so what I'm after is any pointers they may have for such a trip. For example what not to bother taking, what things you consider essential, is there much travelling involved once there to get into fish (fuel?????), good camping locations etc.

Obviously its not something to be taken lightly, due to the distances involved as well as the need to be completely self sufficient. I would prefer to head up with another boat or two, so if your keen on maybe exploring the option of doing a serious sportfishing and spearing trip in your own well equipped and reliable, seaworthy vessel let me know via PM and we'll see what we can do. I will be departing from Onslow.

Sorry, not looking for any crew at this stage.

John

Convoy

Thu, 2009-01-22 18:36

I Fancy the Idea of a convoy of us going over there, I was talking to mates in Karratha while up there about it, but we never got round to doing it, we were going to put in at 40mile as the local lads recon that was the nearest spot to launch. one bloke i knew who had a 6.7mtr banana boat with a 100 on the back did the trip in 4 hours from dampier. he recons just pick your day and its no hastle.

The right time of the year I would be up for a convoy if you wanted to consider

2-3

2-3 boats would be perfect for me Justin. That way the gear can be spread out between boats and we won't have to double up on anything.

I'm limited by school holidays but the April weather is usually pretty good, as long as there is not a late cyclone.

April is definately the pick

April is definately the pick of the months. Hardest thing logistically is fuel... everything else is quite simple provided you're not wanting to stay for extended periods. Make sure you've got enough food/water to stay an extra few days if you need to due to bad weather.

I used to live in Karratha

I used to live in Karratha and know my Dad has been to the Montes from there with one of his friends (whos been several times I think), so I'll ask for any tips when I get a chance.

Lets see, April, that should give me enough time to get a boat, lol.

What if I tow my Tinnie up to Onslow Big John and you fill it with fuel and tow it to the Monty's. Of course I will then have to be a Crewie or you could send me adrift on that big blue ice box of yours.

As Jay said Fuel is the

As Jay said Fuel is the hardest thing.....and don't go after 3 cyclones in a row as we did in 2006YellYell.  Couldn't see the bottom in 1 metre of water!

If I wasn't camping for 5-6 weeks in May, I'd jump at the chance to do the Montes again BJ.  Will do it again some day.

We stayed on the boat for 9 nights (just 2 people). Two 40L engels, geny etc

Does a barge still service the pearlers out there?  Might be able to set up something with them for fuel transport.

We did just over 300nm for the trip.  My tank is 325L.

Cheers Pete

Solo

Pete, sounds like you headed over solo. Must have been a bit nerve racking at times.

Did you travel around much once you arrived there?
Did you take a satellite phone for emergency communications?
