Montes pearl farms. Why did they close?

After going to the montes a few times and searching on google. I still can't find a decent answer to why a place with 100years of pearling history and so many old pearl farms but now has nothing. Evan dampier had pearl farms at some stage. Sounds like that would of been a dream job quite a few years ago. Any info would be much appreciated, thanks

Probably farmed pearls in Asia having an impact these days, Although I couldn't say for sure, hopefully someone will have the answer for you

Pricey I think it was the same reason the ones here in exxy finished up ,they got a viras and they started dropping dead , all the farm just stopped here as we'll

I think the original "pearling history" wasnt for pearls but pearl shell for buttons (mother of pearl).
As said above I believe the Indo pearls have had a big impact though they are certainly still going at the Abrolhos.
Incidentally a great read is "The White Divers of Broome" if you havent already-fascinating bit of old history.
