Montebello Island mud crabs
Gday guys, heading over to the Monties next week for a well earned break. Staying with the guys from Montebello Island safari's with a group of mates. Plan on having one day at least to explore via the dinghy, my questions is in regards to mud crabs, would love to catch a couple as it has been so damn long since I have seen or even tasted so it would really just be for the fun. If possible could someone give me some pointers on where to start ? Best method to catch ? Happy to receive via pm. Not looking to clean up and feed everyone, just want to have some fun with my brother for an hour or two whilst over there.
I have already done a little google earth research and can see a couple of likely spots I believe that would hold crabs but any help would be really appreciated.
If you guys have any other helpful info in regards to fishing that would be awesome as well, my main aim is to flick lures and test a few lures that I have made and generally just have alot of fun and relax.
Cheers Fella's

Haven't been to the Monties
Haven't been to the Monties Scotty but just back from the Mackerel Islands and the standout lures for me were 120mm vibes from Mackdog Tackle, his 95mm sinking stickbaits and orange/red soft plastics from him. The vibes in coral trout colours got hit virtually every time they hit the water! I know someone who was at the Monties a couple of months ago and he also cleaned up with vibes. The stickbaits caught tuna, mackies, queenies, various trevally and a few others.

Cheers Dave, all good mate and appreciate your opinion, I believe I have alot of those lures covered and hopefully the weather plays ball as well to chase down a few of the fish you have mentioned.

Yeah I didn't make the connection on the lure making until the post you just put up. I do recall you posting about it some time ago. You'll have it all covered no doubt. I hope the weather plays ball for you - it sure didn't for us with 15 - 25 knot south-westerlies every bloody day!

Monte bello safari boys have
Monte bello safari boys have been going there longer than anyone. They know where the muddies are.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

All good Dave, I'm not a big
All good Dave, I'm not a big poster to tell you the truth and enjoy reading more. This will be the first decent trip or actually a holiday since covid, so you could say I'm bloody hanging lol.
Cheers Dodgy, I will look them up mate, I have a pretty good idea of what to look for so I dont see myself having too much trouble looking for muddie's.
Catching them ?? lol that might be tricky.

the little creek 600m or so
the little creek 600m or so on north side of where the pontoon for montebello safaris are used to work well, looks like nothing, only fills to about 300mm depth or so and almost dries fully on low tide
staff had a agreement to not talk about it or net it
dont know what happened in the 12 plus years since i last drove Kylin

Agree with the dodgy. I was up there in October last year and the safari boys will help out with some directions. Aa shark says, there is a great little creek to the nother side of the pontoon. Take one of the dingies up there. We saw some small sharks, turtles in crystal clear water. Magic!!
Enjoy your trip.

Thanks Brando, I will
Thanks Brando, I will hopefully get up there for a look.
Thanks Dave, I been to the Montie's quite a few times and this will be my first on a charter staying at the islands so a little different to what I'm use to.
I have quite a few ideas in mind to work with in regards to fishing but really unsure of how the charter will pan out in regards to having a dozen people on board.

I used to feel bad about
I used to feel bad about taking muddies at the Montes because I figured they came from a very limited breeding stock. I thought they were best left to the charter guys that really saw them as a exotic compared to the pilbara guys that can chase them any weekend.
Then I went for a walk through the sanctuary zone mangrove area at low tide and realised there are thousands of them there. Eat as many as you want.

Cheers Dodgy, just got back
Cheers Dodgy, just got back from the Montie's, with a bit of research it was really easy to find the muddie's, I've also had plenty of experience but has been quite a long while since I have actively targeted them.
We found the open bay with mangroves I wanted to target quite easily from the house boat in the dinghy one afternoon as the wind had blown us off the water
and proceeded to have a walk around with 5 of us, literally within the first 50mtrs we had seen 5 big bucks out the front of their holes, everyone had a turn hooking them out and we chose to keep a couple for a feed. There were also plenty of other muddie's openly breeding and left them alone to do their thing as well as heaaaaps of smaller females, I was actually quite surprised at just how many muddie's were within easy access.

Yep, one more charter left
Yep, one more charter left for the year, the accommodation could do with a birthday as it was pretty run down, what wasn't already broken was on its way out.
I believe its a 20hr something steam back to Exmouth and needs pretty calm weather to execute.
