mono vs braid for low profile bait caster

 hi all,

need some advice from all those who use a low profile baitcaster.

which would be a better line to put on to such a unit. mono have memory and its not easy to cast(IMO unless i am using 10lb or below) and the braid digs into the spool and cause some issues like sticking in the spool not wanting to come out..

my 1st low profile is a daiwa megaforce 100TSHL(still using now). had mono on until i spool it up with 16lb.. it was just almost impossible to cast. then switch to braid.. which works great unit you hook up something decent and the braid starts digging into the spool causing some problem on the next cast or even on the fight of that decent hook up.

have recently got my paws on a daiwa TD-Ito 103HL... hoping to get some advice on which would be better to spool on.

line class will be between 16lb - 20lb.

target weight around 2kg-8kg  (ave around 4kg mark)

lure weight: 1/4oz - 3/4oz

freshwater only (heavy weeded area)

thank in advance.

Otto

Braid for sure Otoshi, from

Braid for sure Otoshi, from Megaforce to one of Mr Itos designs you wont know yourself, the digging in problem is probably due to the knock 'em down drag 'em out technique required around heavy weeded areas, I guess you're fishing for Toman etc. I can only suggest keeping your line tightly packed on the spool especially when first filling the spool and maybe applying pressure between thumb and forefinger during retrieve if long casting. If only casting 20mts or so as long the line beneath is tight you should be right. 20lb mono on that particular reel (well known for its long casting ability) and you could probably cast the whole spool of line. Welcome to enthusiast daiwa tackle, it's all down hill from here:-D

I knew you'd moved to Malaysia and were fishing the fresh over there, something I'll have to try one day.

Good Luck Otto

I'll definitely keep that in

I'll definitely keep that in mind Otto, save yourself some money and keep away from Plat and Japan tackle websites the temptation maybe too strong for one so young, fishing the saltwater is the only thing keeping me away from Mr Ito's Megabass offerings. :-D

Braid for sure. Never really

Braid for sure. Never really had the dig in problem using fins or tuffline, did try some expensive PE stuff and it was terrible, will save it for jigging outfits from now on.

Braid

Sat, 2011-02-05 12:50

Braid is definatly better for baitcasters/low profiles. Less memory and less spring effect when casting so braid over mono for sure.

Going for a standard good braid is better than ultra thin so the cut-in effect is minimal. Ideal thing is to spool it up very tight with a line machine then run it all out behind a boat (just before fishing) and wind in under good load. The wet compact braid will reduce the braid cut-in effect also.

On baitcaster i use to have

Sat, 2011-02-05 13:56

On baitcaster i use to have the same problem with lines under 20lb, went straight to 30-40lb braid no more dramas with the digging in, i later found that on other forums in the states they actually recommend running above 30lb on the baitcasters, so wasnt alone with the problem.
