Spinning Whaler?

Man are these fun to catch!!

Went out on the weekend and as I bye catch they are fantastic fun. I use 80lb leader, and it does last just enough time to get them airbourne 1-2 times, and then is over.

If I try to use wire it seem that these dudes are clever and you just get non spinners.

Now some questions:

1 What is the true name? I have been told Black whaler etc but am not sure.

2 Has anyone specifically fished for them, and if so what technique. I would love to know as they certainly go ballastic and I would consider them a sportsfish like mako's because of the fight and airial display.

I wouldnt go out specifically targetting them alone, but our routine out of dampier is to bottom bounce, jig with our 2 rigs, have a live bait on a balloon at the back, and have a Bottom livie with a tethered sinker out the back also, hoping for a big trout etc. This is the rig that gets the attention and I dont use wire on this, because trout dont touch wire in my expierence.

We are often out at night and trout has gone night night, but upping the ante and using wire just gets reefies.

The balloon rig is obviously geared up for toothy visitors.

Any thoughts and/or stories appreciated. I would love to tackle a 5ft + spinner on a rig like my Daiwa Saltiga LD30 TS/ Monster Mesh combo. That might be some serious fun.

The spinner shark (Carcharhinus brevipinna)

Its a proper shark. Dont know about specifically targeting them but. Yer its catch 22. Use wire dont get bites, Use leader get bitten off. Which do you prefer??

I should have checked myself but i was certain it was a nickname for another whaler. Now i know and stand corrected. But yes the 4 times I have had one on line it certainly is a very spectacular sight, and the longest fight was 2 huge jumps spinning right out of the water, then a parting off the lines, and just to showe it up me another leap off freedom. At the time it certainly felt like "up you" and the 4 off us onboard that witnessed it were all very impressed.

Catch 22 allright, might have to try heavier coated Mono like 10X, maybe even up to 150 (although I dont like line classes above 80). I am certainly not giving up on this and if ( I mean IF) I ever win the battle and capture one you will hear about it.

Just going to keep trying.

Lol. Like a few other people

Lol. Like a few other people have said but, Hope you have a big boat. Wouldnt wanna land 1 in a dingy. Mate hooked a shark (unknown species) and bought it into the boat I sold him, a 12 foot dingy. Smashed the seats (wood), his esky and broke 2 rods. I think they pretty much jumped outa the dingy when they realised what was happening. I pissed myself when they told me. That was up pilbara way.

I have seen 1 monster a hooked up mackie up north. Was nothing short of spectaclular. I was under the impression they were pretty closely related to bronzies who also spin on occasion

We hooked one years ago out

Mon, 2011-02-07 17:24

We hooked one years ago out the back of Thevenard, at Sandy Cay whilst live baiting hardyheads. We were using the island dinghys and sitting quietly on the pick reeling in the occasional spanglie, when out of the blue my buddy hooks one of these things. It is fair to say that the fight was very short, but the aerial display left us gobsmacked!! That is one crazy shark!!

Bigger boat proposition definately!! Prefer not to see them when I'm in a dinghy!!

We hooked

quite a few fishing for mackies out from Broome. The hookup usually only lasted untill they jumped clear of the water and spin the line around themselves. Easy way to lose alot of gear

Yea I see these free jumping

Mon, 2011-02-07 18:13

Yea I see these free jumping all around Broome all the time.. Scare the shit outta me when they leap out close to the boat too... And Ive had a few come pretty close to the boat... Even seen one jump and spin and throw a fish out of its mouth. That was pretty cool and only a few hundred metre's off the point too..

Have hooked a couple but thet dont last lont on the line. A couple of jumps and the bust off pretty quick...

Been trying to get one on the camera but its bloody hard and need some luck on the timing too...

Jane bay

Mon, 2011-02-07 18:42

Have hooked a couple of them while ballooning in Jane bay on Ningaloo ststion. They go mental, rip out about 50 metres of line then up they go. Had one on for 20-25 minutes before pulling the hook on one and the other only lasted two jumps. They both were hooked using wire trace.

I have hooked quite a few

Mon, 2011-02-07 18:53

I have hooked quite a few  around here, but mostly on small live jacks that i jig up with a bait jig. At first i thought it was just the jacks making them jump as the sharks that grabed the flags didn't jump at all (yeah i was drinking) but then i found out it was a diffrent type of shark. amazing for sure,

Seen the ones next to the big yellow mooring outside the channel? They empty the fish bins out there and there are a few XOS models among them.

Mon, 2011-02-07 19:44

Was fishing with Daisy in his tinny late one arvo near the Burrup and he got one hell of a run on a gulp. Next minute this 100+ kg thing comes spearing and spinning out of the water not 30 metres away. It was one of those moments where we just both looked at each other and said 'f%$k off' at the same time. Needless to say he just grabbed hold of the spool to snap it off...neither of us wanted company that arvo. Happy if I never see another Spinning whaler again Neels.

Cheers

He was a big bugga alright

Mon, 2011-02-07 20:49

He was a big bugga alright Mullows ans we were feeling pretty insignificant in me tinny, as you say mate you'd have to have a big set to stay connected and follow these things up, seen 'em roll a good 10-15 meters of line up around themselves in 1 leap. Crazy, random feckers.
