Submitted by Fish guts on Tue, 2013-07-09 18:53
has anyone ever had or heard of a mariners report. i just bought a swift craft and when i went to insure it the insurance company mentioned that because the hull is over 15 years old i will need a mariners report. i have never heard of one or know where to get one. any help would be greatly apreciated. Thanks.

Condition report
It's called a condition report most dealers do them it's basically a condition report of the boat to make sure it's seaworthy and worth what its going to be insured for

Any dealer does them for a couple of hundred bucks. They check hull, lights trailer motor and have to sign of on sea worthy cert. you will have to do one every 5 yrs. you can download of the club marine website the requirements so you can go through every thing before hand

what do you mean
I am insured with Club Marine and have never been asked for a survey for any of my boats hope I am not doing any thing that would cause them to not pay out if the worst happens

As they get older you need
As they get older you need to. My old man has been with Club Marine for 26 years with the same boat, only claimed a solar panel and some damage in the 80's and the boat gets inspected from top to tail every couple of years. The mast (60 foot racing yacht) has to be done every year.

SGIO don't require a survey
SGIO don't require a survey on the older hulls .. and are comprehensive and very competitive ..

I'm about to change over the
I'm about to change over the Club Marine, previous insurer decided they wanted a full survey on mine at a cost to me of around $400 -$500, plus I would have had to haul my boat 200km to Adelaide to get it done (they had insured the boat for the last 15 years). They wanted it done every three years. Told them this was impractical given I was only looking to insure it for $10,000. They then decided a condition report would suffice. Two weeks later got a letter no they had reviewed this again and now wanted the full survey - told them to stick it.
Paid $180 for a condition report which the local marine place was able to do (they are a club marine recommended dealer). Club Marine policy is around the same premium I was paying previously and covers a hell of a lot more (including tows/accom if something happens when travelling with the boat etc.)
Prior to going ahead check if they will accept a condition report or a survey which are two separate things. Full Survey is more detailed and more expensive.

report
Mine was a boat hull condition report as my hull is over 20 years old this is club marines policy. I didnt receive any info saying I had to get it done again at some stage. As boats unlimited are club marine dealer they also data dotted my boat plus processed my new insurance (which was the same price as dealing direct with club marine)

Good idea to have a good
Good idea to have a good experienced boat builder do this for you, will give you some piece of mind, so many things can go wrong on boats. Paul at North Shore Boats in henderson is very good 0414 508 337, and does reports.
