Left or Right hand wind?
Submitted by Goodz on Sat, 2009-11-14 20:59
I'm interested to know how many people use left hand over right hand wind on their spinning reels. The obvious benefits of not having to switch hands after casting would definately be handy but is it that much of an advantage, enough to take on the left hand wind.... how long did it take to get used to, for anyone that's switched? And then how do you go using left hand for spinning and right hand for overheads?
Any other advantages of using left hand wind? Someone convince me...

i switch cause of fly
i switch cause of fly fishing as i am right handed and you would cast of with right and reel on your left hand, you cant just switch just to strip. so i changed all my reels to left hand reel got use in 2 weeks.
i think its better as you dont want to keep casting and reeling with the same hand if you fly or even lure fishing.

You know you can strip with
You know you can strip with a different hand that you reel with ;). Seems most comfortable for me, cast with the right, strip with the left, then if fighting the fish on the reel, switch to winding with the right. Just a lot easier to wind fast with the right.

I can use both, but funnily
I can use both, but funnily enough once you do switch you feel like an absolute spastic going back to right hand wind. I suppose I got used to it fishing bream and flat head comps back east where you do a tonne of acurate casting and not having to swap hands was easier and quicker.
What I find funny is that a mate fishes lefty only on spin and overhead, and I cannot get used to left hand wind overheads and I think it is more because you have to balance the rod as well on an overhead.

that is exactly right once
that is exactly right
once you've made the switch to the left hand wind , it will just become so easy. you'll wonder what you were playing at.
if you're right handed , then your power arm (right) will be using the rod to fight the fish. your weaker hand just retreaves line as oppose to using your reel like a boat winch.
i'm in the market for a left hand overhead now
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

I use both. For light
I use both. For light fishing, I tend to use my right hand simply because it is more comfortable & suits my casting technique. For jigging, I have a left & right hand combo - spread the pain evenly across both arms.

Hrmm possibly I might try
Hrmm possibly I might try the switch, altho I do have a dodgey right shoulder which could be a good reason not to... The thought of winding with my left hand just makes me feel unco... but I'll give it a go sometime!

Im left handed.....but I wind with right hand coz I rather hold the rod and fight the fish with the strongest arm. I can cast with either but again prefer left as I can push harder with my left arm.

I'm a left hander so it's
I'm a left hander so it's natural to hold the rod in the left and wind right but a few mates I know who swapped found it easy and haven't looked back. They still use right hand overheads though.

I'm right handed, I've tried
I'm right handed, I've tried fishing left handed and its fine spin but you just can't get the oveheads.
Occasionally when lure casting, I just swap to casting as if I was left handed to save swapping which hand the reel is in.

yeah. it makes sense to pump
yeah. it makes sense to pump the fish with your master arm and reel with the non-master arm. makes life slightly easier. i havent caught many a big fish in my lifetime and i know i've got much to learn but after that huge mulla that i pulled up a couple of days back, LH wind is the way to go.

I'm right handed but fsh left hand wind with everything
Have done since I was a boy. Hard to change back now.
Only draw back is the choice of reels for overheads is very limited.
As has been said earlier, my strong arm fights the fish while the weak arm simply retrieves the line.

is not a problem I have, both guns are equally ripped. I suggest a few of you girly men find a gym or a weights set.

Righty
Do most things right handed except when using an axe, shovel or fishing rod which I swing or cast over the left shoulder but still wind with my right.
Makes it handy when fishing on a small area as you don;t have to step to one side to cast though pity help a drop in who stands to my left side!!
Son Jeff[deepwater] can do both sides and wind either hand,he gets some odd looks when on a lure casting session he sometimes turns the eggbeater upside down and winds the handle backwards with his left hand giving the right one a rest

I am Right handed so the rod
I am Right handed so the rod stays in the right hand no swapping or fumbling around. I belive lifting and winding is the way to do it so the right arm my strong arm is where the rod stays and the dumb hand winds the reel. When casting lures in the snags for barra or Mangrove Jacks quick response is vital no time to swap hands.
I find it hard to see why the major manufacturers do not see this as normal and cater for only left handed people? whats up with that I dont know.
Cambells protackle have a great section on there web site to cater for us orthodox fishers..
By Hook or Spear, its all good..

Is there really THAT much of
Is there really THAT much of a difference in the "strength" of your arms?! I would think you'd have to do more than just write with your right hand or pick your nose, to make that arm stronger. I would think that my left arm was just as strong to pump a rod as my right arm, and my right hand would be far more coordinated to wind a reel.
There is still the fact that I have to switch hands after casting tho... but that's not a real issue with most types of fishing that I would do, especially not boat fishing.

the fact that you have to
the fact that you have to switch hands after casting is reason enough alone.
honestly , anyone , give it a go for a week.
you won't go back to gimp style. i guarantee it.
and as for not being able to control your left hand to wind in a circle?
please!

tell me honestly
how many fish have you lost switching hands after a cast previously before allegedly "seeing the light"?
I'm yet to ever see it happen. Certainly nothing to warrant swapping to an inferior style with fewer reel choices.

well if you are right handed huggy
go throw a tennis ball at a stubbie 30m away with your left hand.
see how good your accuracy is mate.
same analogy when casting into real tight spots for fish.......
your co-ordination works best with your natural arm.
learnt throwing lures at trout and if you didn't hit the exact spot and work the lure the instant it hit the water.....well ther goes your trout or bream or .......

I can throw very well with both
a legacy of 15 years playing baseball and cricket - but thats not what we are on about is it?
And IMO working a lure the instant it hits the water for trout is a bad technique. You should be throwing flies anyway heathen.......
I still contend that the theory of "missing fish" when switching hands is a fallacy. You manually flip the bail and change hands seamlessly anyway, makes not a squat of difference as you still need to flip the bail by hand (left) before winding the handle in any case.

fished behind many a wand and pulled their missed fish
enjoyed the look on their face
anyways you only chase hatchery fish......
persoanlly its easier to work the lure, hold the rod (cause i only catch big fish) and cast accurately with my right and wind left, being a right hand man.
being such it is annoying having to swap hands when using baitcasters and the like because most are geared for right hand wind, hence my preference for spin reals.
whatever floats your boat but to me rod action is more important than winding

biggest thing for me is that
biggest thing for me is that you want your rod in you power arm.
thats what fights the fish.
you wouldn't enter an arm wrestling comp using your weaker arm would ya??

I actually like to keep the rod in my left arm, yeah i switch after casts but it takes all of half a second anyway. Anytime nicson lets me use his reels, when hes not looking i switch them all to right handed, and put it back in the rod holder.. one day it will just be easier for him to be a right handed.
If Rangas can dye their hair, lefties can learn to use right :)
P.s I catch that many big fish on my non power arm its become my power arm ;) theres a thought

i am right handed but my left arm is stronger for some reason so its my left arm that holds the rod and right that winds, i have tried winding lefty style but it just dont see natural. and also got to agree with what the masked man says

I reel right handed but don't have any issues casting left or right, there going to be situations when you need to cast on your opposite side, so most of you probably do it with out giving it a 2nd thought.
