Learning new techniques

Hi guys,
I've been looking at a lot of videos recently and lots of people using fly rods, baitcaster reels etc... which are all new to me. I've done a lot of fishing when i was younger but just using standard surf rods and eggbeater reels.
Do you think it's important to learn to use a baitcaster reel and how many of you learn new techniques (such as fly fishing in the ocean)?

Depends on whether you need to use a baitcaster. Not much point learning something if you dont need it.
Currently trying to learn how to fly cast in preparation for salmon season.

I think it's more about
I think it's more about enjoying learning different techniques more than 'if i need to'. I think i can successfully fish most areas i go with my standard spinning reels.
Are the Salmon more responsive to Flys or is it just something you want to try?
