Land based Dhufish?

Just interested know how many people have caught a Dhu landbased? I know my old man has caught a few back in the day, the best being a 20kg+ fish that was set free by the flying gaff snapping the line, only to float for the next 15 mins whilst my dad casted a sinker and set of gang hooks over it to try snag it, last cast before it was out of range and he got it and they landed it! Great effort, won the fish of the week in the west australia probably 15 years ago.. haha.. may have to try dig up the photo sometime.

My mate and I are keen to make a landbased Dhu capture and was just wondering if many others have done it? We have a few good spots down south sourced from the old man that we will try when the weather is better but may have to wait till they head in closer.. what time of the year do they seem to be in shallower? I've heard late autum is good? A decant Dhuie from the rocks would be a great achievement I think.

I have caught 3 over the years from the S-bend area, first one was undersize, second around 9kg and third around 7kg all on baits intended for mulloway, shark's and big tailor but I am not complaining!

Yeh thats a club I'd like to join! Sounds like most are an accidental catch while going for other fish? Definately be nice to catch one when targetting them off the rocks. Also sounds like more are caught up north from the shore than down south? Is that a water temp thing?

Very interesting... can't

Mon, 2009-09-21 17:10

Very interesting... can't say I've fished much at all north of perth but sounds like theres some decant fish caught up that way... think I'll still be making the trecks down the deep south tho to fish into those deep cold waters and see if I can score a dhuie... atleast if I get one now I can say I was "targeting" them since I posted this thread.. haha.

Goodz,

There are a couple of golden LB Dhu spots down here (kept in tight secrecy), my mate lucked into a 17kg dhu off one of these spots a bit over a year ago, went bloody hard on the old 200lb handline. I havn't been lucky enough to stick one yet but it is definitely a big one Im looking to tick off!

Conto's

Slippery and slopey rocks at Conto's are known to produce the odd one.Torpedo is another plus from Bob's hollow off the rocks.Along the rocks by Three Bears surfing spot,Sugarloaf out the front, out to the left, right on the tip of Cape Naturaliste or if you have a little dinghy, the northern rock out front at Canal Rocks. There is a bit a crevice where you can get a boat up on to the rock on the NR corner, just walk over and there is a magnificent fishing platform about 25feet up off the water.

Have heard of dhuies being caught at all these locations regularly over the years

The rocks at Sth Tennesee

Over the hill from Lowlands at the base of the cliffs - and some huge blue groper as well, very slippery when wet though, extreme caution essential
