John Dory

 hello all,

during a recent fishing trip with the family, the topic of the ones that got away arose,

my cousion and uncle mentioned a few years ago they caught a large round thing with a black spot and enlongated spines on the dorsal fins, Large head and mouth etc etc, not knowing at the time they released a nice size John Dory and only after they got back home and researched did they realise their folly.

around a year ago i visited the underwater observatory at the end of the busso jetty and was shocked to spot one lazily cruising a sand bed.

ive read these fish are one of the best of the best eating fish in the ocean, but never hear of any one chasing them

so my question here is has anyone caught one and could you release some insight into the targeting of these elusive fish?

light searching of the web and few fishing books mention a live whiting fished near the bottom...

There are plenty of them out in Geo bay but not too many get caught on a fishing line.

The kiwis catch a lot of them on soft plastics

so that maybe something to consider and I concur with the others that live baits are the go as they are not commonly known to take baits.  They are not strong swimmers so no there is not much of a fight. Imo they are one of the best eating fish there are.

Top eating

They are top eating.

I think they are so hard to catch is because their mouth is huge compared to the body size, hence the need to use big hooks and with big hooks you need big baits that are too big for the fish to swallow.

appreciate the help guys

Wed, 2013-03-06 20:46

thanks for the help guys, ill be continuing to let out a yellowtail under a balloon off the busso jetty, although that does seem to work for everything from sambos to tailor even the squid so just gotta cross fingers for a dory by-catch.

any other landbased locations to increase my chances?
