JetSki Fishing WA

Hi everyone,

I am posting this topic to try and grow the JetSki Fishing extreame sport in WA.  JetSki fishing is very popular in South Africa, New Zealand, and America with most members probably between to South African or New Zealand. Not sure which one of these two are the biggest but they are doing the JetSki fishing thing pretty often. New Zealand has been doing well with great fish comming out.
We are a few guys at the moment doing JetSki fishing in WA and we would like to encourage this way of fishing so as to grow the popularity in WA.  It is very new here but I am sure there has been some guys doing it very quietly for some time. How about letting us hear about you, your catch and your JetSki fishing stories. Pictures would be great as well.
Why?  It is a different way of fishing, It's exciting, you can move around pretty quick, it is easy, it is cheaper than a boat, it's a challenge because you have no help so it's you and your catch, its nice to go out and fish together as a group and this is the safe way to do it. There are more reasons than these but I gues for me its the excitement of the speed in getting to where you want to be pretty quickly and most of all, meeting new JetSki fisho's and going out fishing as a group.
I know this is not everyones kettle of fish but surely there will be some of you guys that would want to give this a go.
If you are interested in JetSki fishing and need some advise please let me know. Between the few of us currently doing this sport I am pretty confident that we can help, advise and assit by sharing ideas with you in getting the setup required to get started. Once you have the JetSki you are 90% there. The rest is easy. There is also a lot of help on the web sites so no shortage of information.
Very important - I would value support in this sport especially in the way we practice it. That is to obay all the local fishing rules and ledgeslation requirement regarding the boating rules, PWC rules and all that goes together with a responsible attitude. I am sure if we develop and promote JetSki fishing in this way we will be supported and respected in the fishing community.
Any experienced fisho's wanting to give advise here please do so. We can do with your help, advise and support. It will be very much appreciated.
Looking forward in hearing from you,
Regards

A few of my surfer mates

Sat, 2010-05-15 19:21

A few of my surfer mates from down south do a bit of fishing from their jetski's when they're not towing in. Get a few fish I hear!

Got anymore pics of your jetski captures?

Dunno if you can say it's cheaper than fishing from a boat, those jetski's arent cheap :) Cheaper to run though I guess?

Sat, 2010-05-15 19:48

Hi Goodz,

Glad to here there are some guys doing this down south. Do they have there ski's rigged up etc. I would like to get in contact with them so we can team up on some fishing adventures whenever we go south or when they come north.

I don't have any new pic's but will post them when I catch something worth while, that's a promise. I did not take pictures of the squid, herring and garfish I caught. This is mainly for bait and snacks at home. It is fun catching them though.

A good sharkskin wetsuite

Sun, 2010-05-16 11:34

A good sharkskin wetsuite and old Jacket takes care of the cold. Its only my feet that gets chilly even through the booties. The worst is the spray on the face, the salt water takes its tole after a while. I always have heaps of fresh water bottles with me to rince my face and that helps a lot. What's amaising is how one can forget all of these issues when you get a bite, then it is all worth it at the end of the day.Smile

Hi, Thanks SandGroper. I am hooked on these TV fishing programmes, they give a lot of handy tips. The iFish guys make it look so easy but I guess you need to know what youre doing when you catch a billie like the one they caught. Got to be carefull with those fish, if they get spooked they can hurt you as you're not that protected on the Ski as on a bout. It is a lot of fun though, maybe my day will come some time, just got to make it happen, Cheers.

i didnt think it looked easy, would be with a main boat raising them, but as far as hooking a reeling them in.. not so much, and ive had a saily leap onto a marlin board of a 25 bertram before, was still very green aswell, the easy part was tagging it, getting it untangled and back into the water whilst still green not so easy, still have the scars up my arms from the bill

Cheers for that. I supose he uses it to mulch his food from time to time. SmileI can just dream about catching one of them from the Ski. Have to go far north for that and get a massive charter bout as well for company and transport. Would love to do that before I'm to old.

Another friend of mine towed his JetSki to the Abrollos Islands last week and he got some decent Makerel and Groper. He has not joined the website yet but I will try and convince him to post some pics.

I've been deciding if I should get a jet ski or a boat for fishing. Got about 15 to spend and I don't think I can get a big enough boat for that price to go out in the ocean around rottnest and stuff like that. What are your thoughts?

Hi Sammut, sorry for the

Fri, 2010-05-28 21:33

Hi Sammut, sorry for the late reply, I was in KL for the week, got back this morning.

JetSki fishing is a unique sport and you have to consider what you want very carefully, I can not tel you that you will like it. Best advise I can give is for you to go and get a demo ride on a JetSki and see if you like it. Visit some of the JetSki fishing forums and read up a little on the sport. Below is just some areas of importance to consider.

In WA you are not allowed to go further than 5 NM out on a craft shorted than 3.75 meters. JetSki's are only about 3.3 - 3.4 meters and are just to short for the deep see fishing ventures. It also depends on what you want to go and catch, if you are willing to travel up north or south you can get places where you can catch most of the speicies withing the 5 NM limit.

Safety is the major thing, My advise to JetSki fishing is, never venture out alone on a Ski, always have another JetSki fisho on his ski to go with you. Two Ski's are better than one. In that way you can watch out for each other in case one has an emergency of some kind. Always check the weather and make sure you have all the safety equipment as required on boats, EPIRD, Flares, etc. (I can not over emphasise this point and I am sure everyone will agree with me on this). You do not need a marine radio but I would advise you to get a portable radio,  Another area of importance is the discipline in riding, boat ramp etiquette etc.

Let me know how you go and if you are sure this is what you want to do I am sure we can help you with advise as to options that are available for you. Most of us have equipped our ski's with home made plans and efforts. Nothing wrong with that, it works and is much more cost effective than buying ready made rod holders etc.

Best of luck with you descision.

Regards

how is this going to effect you guys?

http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-australia/regulations-could-stop-surfers-using-jet-skis-to-tackle-big-waves/story-e6frg14u-1225872916761
quote"
Under Department of Transport rules for jet skis, riders can operate only in a designated waterski area and must carry an observer on the back of the craft. "

do these new rules have huge effects on Jetski fishing and zones you can fish in and launch from.
I know the rules are ment to keep the cowboys under control and is now effecting the surfers being towed out, but how are the new WA Jetski rules going to effect jetski fishing?

I know the ruling is directly linked to Tow-in-surfing, but seems to be a bigger issue about limiting jetski usage and range from shore etc. Are we going to see simular limitations?

regards
Tony

Thanks for the comment, its alway nice to get this feedback as it will help keep us alert of all the regulations etc. I don't believe this will go through after they have investigated it, hense for the following reasons, Surfers pull a floating devise for the surfer to hold on to. Same as the Jet Ski rescue devise used by life savers.  Riding in conditions like these guys do there is nothing safer than a JetSki craft as it can negotiate the conditions very quick. It is difficult enough to have a spotter facing backwards on a Ski, leave alone having a spotter in conditions like they surf in. It will just give the rider an additional person to worry about. Turning fast in waves you need to control your balance and if the spotter does not work with you on this one he could be wiplashed of the Ski. In my opinion it will be more dangerous using a spotter than not. My take on this is that they follow the same log on, log of rules as fisherman going out to fish. At least then someone knows where they are and what they are doing.  I just wonder if the guys making these rules have ever been on a JetSki in conditions like these. I don't believe they have??

I am sure us fisho's will be ok on this one.

Cheers
