its awesome app, dont have a chartplotter on the tinnie so use this to look for ground and mark likely spots on the handheld gps. It pretty accurate and can use it shorebased too. Best $15 you'll ever spend.
mine has achart other than my navionics platinum, with the navionics in it, it gives me two map options, there is not a hell of a lot of difference between them.
Bloody good app, only had it for a few days, it sure beats sitting on the boat planning new ground to fish the couch infront of the heater suits me fine on the cold ones.
would like a pointer to come up with the co ordinates although it get fairly close.
Also switching between the google earth shot and navionics could be streamlined a bit. it might just be me getting used to it also..
No GPS Apple does include A-GPS (Assisted GPS) via Wi-Fi and 3G in the 3G-powered model, but the size of the iPad means that a simple, low-powered real GPS receiver could have been built in to the device, yet wasn't.
Alfred: The ipad WIFI+3G model has proper GPS (can be used anywhere)
Just a bit of clarification:
A-GPS, contrary to popular belief is still full proper GPS. Basically it just can get some data via 3g/wifi to make the initial setup quicker (but isnt required). The iphone 3g has A-GPS, but it can still receive a GPS signal waaaay out of any kind of phone range.
The first iphones didnt have GPS, but they did approximate your location using cell tower signal strengths, though these models were not released in Australia. Often people think the 3g iphones have a similar system, but they dont, they have full proper GPS. Though, I say this is mostly apple's fault for using confusing terminology in the first generation iphones.
The 3g ipad's ("WIFI + 3G" as apple calls them) also have A-GPS (full GPS), so yes, a real GPS receiver was built into the device (even for its size). It has the same capabilities as the iphone 3g
The 'wifi ipad', i.e. the standard one, i.e. the one without 3g does NOT have a GPS chip. It can sometimes find your approx location if you're near a known wifi point, but thats it. It'll be pretty useless out on a boat, etc
Yeah see what you mean, I just thought they meat that the ipad's a-gps was just network triangulation because the review says the ipad doesn't have something that the iphone does have.
Yeah, it can be a bit confusing, mostly because the original iphone did that network triangulation, and i think apple called that a-gps (or at least was confused with a-gps).
The regular ipad WIFI doesnt have the gps chip though (but the WIFI+3G one does) so the review coulda been for the cheaper model.
This is a forum not your kingdom, thank you hlok for correcting this guy who must have the last say on everything.
Quite annoying when putting an opinion in an some self appointed know it all has to dis everything.
The models we have are the same as other countries, so not really a 'local' model per se (as there are two types, then a few diff storage capacities for each).
Both have bluetooth though. I'm not sure how it would interface with the ipad itself as you may need specific software/app perhaps?
If you get the 3G ipad (available here) then you wont need an external receiver though. (about $170 price difference between the models for a given storage size)

I use it, its saved the day more than once. On another occasion I used it to navigate out to the FADs.
Must say I've never really gotten the hang of the tides on it, it tends to give some really annoying error when I try and use it.

There are no charts per se
There are no charts per se in the HSD-7 without a navionics card! It only has limited coastal outlines, with no depth info IIRC.
Its the same chart detail I have in my navionics cards in my sounder.

Example reference (but there are multiple).
I'm open to being corrected on any of the above, but to the best of my knowledge (and as confirmed in the specs by apple), that is how it is.

Settle Petal, I was being friendly about it and I'm still not sure if you meant you had an iphone or an ipad.
As Hlokk pointed out some of the ipads don't ship with a real gps and thats where the review I read was cribbed from.
