Interesting Catch

Got an interesting one yesterday, good size southern cray with its face chewed off. Never seen anything like it before after catching literally hundreds as a rec fisher and tonnes as a pro, all legs were gone but head and tail still full of meat.

Occies will usually get in from under the tail and suck the head and tail dry but nothing like this. Should have taken a pic but didn't want to risk getting the phone wet because it was rather sloppy with the sea breeze cranked right up and didn't want to bring a half eaten cray in

 Hi Carnarvonite ,

Cuttlefish will start eating where ever they latch on .

Have seen crays with heads , bodys or tails chewed .

Occys hold and suck the meat out and cuttlies hold & chew .

Wobby don’t eat crays

As far as iam aware .They have crays sitting on them under ledges. ( while diving) They use crays to lure in occy . There smart . Occy bite , inject stuff in cray , crab , shell to help break down meat ( turn it to liquid ) then they suck out . Cuttle fish very possible or small blue gropper or baldie. Gropper attack and take crays of your snare while diving pain in ass . But great to watch

While diving, I've had a wobby come in front of me and storm a ledge full of crays. They bailed in different directions to safer parts of the ledge and the mandurah silt clouded up the vis, so it was hard to see what went down. I can't say for sure that he/she was doing it for food, or whether it was some sort of predatory move - he/she came in reasonably quick though.

Yep, have had a few come in for a very close sniff when I've shot fish..they've scooted off when I've defended though. Haven't gone near a ledge with a wobby after that day, he came in like a bull, bit much for me

Wobbies are cool

I filmed this at the Abrolhos, 1:30 take of  following a Wobby, then bigger brother came at me "coughing/barking"? then the 3rd one stood on it's tail in the shadow of a cave (not in the vid) ready to strike, good fun but my time/courage was running low,  : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zqvVP_dO0Y
