How will your fishing be affected during the demersal bans?

With the ban coming into effect at the end of the week, I thought I would start a thread to see how people are going to be fishing during the bans.

Are you going to cut down on your fishing effort, maybe give some landbased fishing a bit more of a crack, or head out just as often and target some species you dont often target (maybe on the ocean, or maybe in the rivers and dams)? Maybe some try for species you havent targetted before, head up north/down south or perhaps the ban wont affect you much at all if you're allready targetting those species, or are mostly a land based fisho?

I'm sort of looking forward to it as hopefully I'll get a chance to learn more about targetting some other species on a boat. Would be good to go jigging for pre-season sambos, or just get some whiting and squid. Would be nice to knock a KG off my target list too. Will have to see what opportunities present themselves.

well getting married right

Mon, 2009-10-12 12:21

well getting married right in the middle, so thats taking some of the time up.

Cray season is only 1 month away, so people will be gearing up for that, including me. Will have my pots in thats for sure.

Other things will be doing is targeting bream in the river, good option as i can take the missus and some mates out on the river and cruise about just throwing plastics about while the girls sit back and sunbake with a wine in their hand.

Also will do some jigging for sambos, caught quite a few recently, even managed a 15kg one on sat off jurien on a plastic using my flick rod....

additionally will the one MAIN thing i want to conquer is getting a BIG metro tailor on popper or lure from the boat, out round the reefs. this is a must for me.

I like the sound of that last one Bodie

Mon, 2009-10-12 12:31

There are some hooter tailor around at the moment around the beaches, so there must be some beauties offshore.

For me, the ban won't make much difference as I can't get out boat fishing at the moment - so it will chasing big tailor near the inshore reefs for me.

Mon, 2009-10-12 12:33

To be honest winter was such a bust I didn't get out once after August probably.

I'll be looking forward to cray diving but also I'd like to try and hit up a few sambos and YTKs.

plenty of options, as said maybe a sambo jig, some good fishing off the beaches for tailor, getting the boat sorted out with new goodies ready for the new season, maybe a fish in the river for mulloway that have started firing a bit of late

Mon, 2009-10-12 12:44

Yeh i went out in cockburn at my secret spot n had my rod busted of by a massive tailor , got it on a mulie on gangs, easily bigger then  70 cm it smashed my reel ,windin in a playing him nicely then he just went berserk jumped out of the water bout 10metre's from the boat back into the water an bit through my 80 lb trace damnnn i was guttered lol , during the ban i think i might try jigging for Sambos as i have never really jigged for them , an might even go on a trip up north , or target deeper water species.

The Ban

Mon, 2009-10-12 13:21

I am unlikely to fish during the demersal ban.   As I average going fishing once a month and take on average two V21 species on each occasion 4 V21 species will be saved by the ban and I will have saved at least $300.

In the mean time I will be grumpier than usual, my wife will choose to go out shopping more to get away from me and will probably spend the $300 I have saved.

Mon, 2009-10-12 13:33

Ill be fishing light tackle sport with soft plastics all through the ban hopefully get out to the fads and containers a few times during the ban weather permitting but mostly chase species on the ban list still just with light tackle and some jerk shads also wouldnt mind getting into a few of the big tailor and also try a bit off trolling towards the end of the ban and a fair bit of night fishing for some sharkies and maybe a mulloway im mostly in it for the fun so i dont really mind letting these fish go back to swim for another day

They are not allowing catch and release of any of the band species, so that will be illegal

might even start popper/luring washes around the rocks etc.

Wont be targeting any V21 but!!

Focus!

Mon, 2009-10-12 20:52

A good question hlokk, something that i was explaining all day in my shop today!

The world hasnt ended.........focus on what ya can do and not what ya cant do!

I've written articles for many years now on "targeting a species" and its very relavent now especially with listed available species!

I'll be targetting;

Offshore tailor on lures

Offshore big KG's

Boat Squiding

Boat crabbing

Diving for crays

Sooooo plenty to do and the 8 weeks will be over quickly and back to 10months of norm!~

Simple Laughing

thats all you need :)

Last season we caught heaps of crays early on, we pulled our pots out.

This year i will be doing a trial with a mate of mine

Comparing which pots are more successful.

there is apparently a new plastic pot out, thats the shape of the wooden slat ones.

So we are going to drop, 1 normal slat, 1 small slat, 1 normal plastic, and one plastic the shape of a wooden.

Im guessing they will all be quite similar in catches, mainly due tot he area we will drop them.

Dunno, people always say

Tue, 2009-10-13 08:18

Dunno, people always say that the plastics are bad until they get a bit dirty and the crays can climb on the a bit easier.

Won't be my problem, I'll be diving for them in any case =)
