HINs being stolen FYI and why?
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Wed, 2023-03-22 09:50
Just thought it was worth posting that our Yacht CLub has sent out warnings that theives are targeting hins. Flying Squadron advised us that 12 boats had their hins stolen between 10-11 March and they were mostly targeting Riviera's
What can they do with a hin?? - its connected to the owner and the registered boat?
cheers

sounds like
someone on drugs or drunk with a great idea they could sell them without realizing they are useless

Considering they are riveted
Considering they are riveted on, 12 boats worth is a hell of a commitment for a drunk/druggo

When you replace the stolen
When you replace the stolen hin do they give you a new number or remake the old? If you get the old number then that number is not classed as a stolen boat so there could be 2 boats out there with same hin 1 stolen 1 not?

Also thought about the rec
Also thought about the rec boats being used for picking up drugs better to put someone elses hin on a boat if planning on possibly dumping it if things go wrong.

I was at Hillarys Yacht Club
I was at Hillarys Yacht Club when the largest bust in history went down in January. I know someone involved in the sale of the boat and they didn't worry about the HIN. All they wanted to check was that it was mechanically sound and had plenty of room under the deck!

I wonder if they would be
I wonder if they would be going interstate, I doubt the states would talk but could be wrong...
Perhaps an organised theft network and can get away with registering interstate with a dif hin as if its been purchased rather than stolen????

The only reason I can think
The only reason I can think of for stealing them would be to put on a stolen boat of the same type then sell it on .
