Help with rod choice for Stella 1000FD

Hi fishwrecked members,

Ive decided to bite the bullet and purchase a Shimano Stella 1000FD and im having a few problems deciding on a rod to match with the reel. Ill be fishing 2-4lb braid and casting weights from 1-9grams. Any ideas or information on this topic would be great.

Cheers Matt

Using it for bream, or something else? Most ultralight rods i've seen (1-3kg) wouldnt quite cast up to 9g (at least according to their rating, and you could gently lob heavier stuff anyways). Does it need to cast up to 9g often? Of course, you could use a 2-4kg rod, but not so much fun with 2lb braid.

I have a feeling that certain types of rods (e.g. my bosco) would bend a reasonable amount on the light line, but still cast reasonable weights due to the rod action. Bit softer, so not ideal for pinging lures with a lot of punch though. My bosco casts sub 3g bream lures fine though, and can do up to 15g twisties belted out. Is rated 4-12lb which sounds too wide, but it actually loads up heaps when fishing 4lb line (but you can just push and push it). Whether its the right rod depends on your preferences and use though (I use something else for bream for example). I have a feeling the crony's may be similar (but I havent felt them).

Yeh using it for breaming, maybe a little bluewater fun, but mainly breaming. Nah very rairly cast 9g but nice to know I can if need be, be fishing in the 1-5g range more than anything.

Im currently using a 6'6 2-4kg tournament tcurve matched with a twinpower 1000fc and 4lb, which is a great combo for stopping fish around structure but im looking at more a 2lb outfit for breaming on flats, nice and light and a lot of fun. I did try using this rod with 2lb but it doesnt load up very well on the lighter line.

I had a look at the Gary Howard Samurai bream and bass rods, but havent heard a lot about them.? In saying that though i had a 6kg gamefishing stick built by Gary Howard in the late 90's and by far is the best rod I have ever used.

Id match it up to either a 1-2kg 6'6" Nitro Vapor for Breaming/Estuary/River fishing or the lightest Daiwa Luvias rod in the range for all round work/ocean etc.

kinga86- cheers I had nitro on the list, they look the part.

Brody- Have you personally used the gloomis dsr820 GLX before? or know anyone who has? Not a huge fan of gloomis at the moment, had one break just infront of the top grip whilst on a large bream, was not happy to say the least! im spending the money on the reel so I wont be cheaping out on the rod.

Man Overboard- Yeh cheers ill pop in and see what he has to say.

Keen to look at these CRONY rods though if anyone knows where i can get a look at one.?

Yeah, a mate has that rod

Yeah, a mate has that rod and after using T-Curve Flights, this is his new Favourite. I've only had a go while catching squid but. That's the good thing with Loomis though, if it is an accidental breakage you pay half the RRP of the rod, to get a full new one. If the damage is claimable under warranty then you'll get a new rod.

It comes down to how much you are willing to pay basically, but very nice rods.

Have a look at the top end

Have a look at the top end daiwas too, some may say its 'evil' to match shimano and daiwa but i've got a Team Daiwa Battler Taurus and I LOVE IT! The steez range, the luvias rods, the heartland z range and of course the Battlers are all superb rods. The Saltist Light Rock Fish Game and infeet rods have the length and are suited to flats fishing. Also check out the megabass rods.

Also don't discount custom rods as you can get exactly what you want.

Pflueger Supreme

Sat, 2010-08-14 10:17

We stock the Pflueger Supreme Tournament rods. Uses American AST (All Star Tackle) blanks designed by Japanese pro anglers. Loaded with Fuji Titanium single leg SiC guides and ergonomic reel seat.

For the Stella 1000 I'd go with a 6'6" 1-3kg. Lightweight and very responsive tip.

We also got the 7ft model in 1-3kg as well.

Drop by and check them out.
