gaffs
hey all,
me good mate dropped my gaff out from point perron lately in about 60 metres (on a stonkin dhu, pictures soon).
not sure what brand it was, but jeez it was a ripper. scored it at an auction for $20. it hade a nice wide gape on the hook (prob about 120mm), stainless hook of about 8-9mm diameter, on a solid thin aluminium shaft of around 15mm ish, and a foam handle with a lanyard. all up, probably around 4 foot long overall.
just wanted to know if anyone else has seen one like it, what brand it is, where i can get one, etc, etc.
OR
any other good brands youse can recomend.
the mako ones look ok. nice and solid. also the black magic fibreglass ones look the goods, but unsure about the lifespan of fibreglass.
what do youse reckon?

I bought the Mako extreme gaff and it is a BEAST!!
You can buy different length handle's to suit either boat or shore based fishing. They have a Perth based office and plenty of the tackle shops stock their accessories.
All up mine was about $100 with a 2m long pole and extreme hook head and blanking cap for the end.

if your fishing out of a boat all i can suggest is invest in a big net .... im sick of deckies gaffing leaders or hooks and loosing fish .. worse is a shoulder shot that stuffs my prime dhufish fillet . . and good forbid you try to gaff a salmon (little buggers are bulletproof) .. the only gaff i carry is a very short shaft one so i can gaff a dhu myself if others are busy with hookups - otherwise its allways a big net.

Certainly agree with feral there, too many fisho's are not good with the gaff, much easier to go the net for that quality fish to save from the 'aww shit, it moved as I was gaffing it, sorry mate' and also makes the photo's that much better. :)

yeah the nets are have their pros and cons, but the boys that come on my boat all have to have the prerequisite that they gaff or be gaffed!
i still prefer gaffs though. better for your larger fish like mackies and big tuna.
thats why my lost (sob) gaff was such a ball tearer - it was nice and light, but still heavy duty enough to land big fish.

I got one of the Mako
I got one of the Mako Barra/Snapper combo Net/Gaffs myself. Personnally like the other lads said i prefer to net all my fish(even up to a 17kg Dhui), but it is good to be able to have the option to unscrew the net head and screw on the heavy duty gaff head(havent had to do so yet though, need to catch bigger fish!). From memory i think i got it from a Ranger Outdoors store for $59.95.

I have noticed
that you don't see a lot of gaffs in the shops these days, but you certainly see a large range of nets. Not like when I was younger, I remember seeing gaffs all the time. Probably a reflection in the shift in attitudes of anglers with many going the catch and release option.
I use a fastnet rubber landing net - best thing I have ever bought. I tried the environet and while they are good, they hold too much water and it makes them weighty as. The rubber netting alleviates this issue, doesn't harm the fish and best of all your lures either dont get caught in there, or they are really easily removed.
I have a gaff on board, but I have yet to use it.
