Fuel Usage and Cover

Hi guys,

I have just picked up a 2nd hand 6m RIB with a 175hp Honda 4 stroke and 200L tank, weighs about 2T on trailer.

I was just wondering if the fuel consumption gauge is accurate, I cruise at about 3500rmp at 27kt and it reads about 40L/h. Is this reasonable?

I have been finding I have been using a little bit more so far by my calculations.

My concern is I keep the boat under a cover and when it has been sitting for a day or so I can smell fuel when I go under the cover. Is this normal or should I be worried there is a fuel leak somewhere?

not sure about fuel

not sure about fuel consumption for that boat but sometimes just sitting on the trailer the fuel can expand and expel some out the breather tube.

try to find out if the smell is from the breather or from somewhere else.

sometimes helps to crack open the fuel cap on hot days (especially if the tank is full) to let off some pressure

 I use around 15l for a 35min

I use around 15l for a 35min trip to rotto in a 6m c/console with 75hp on the back. Based on that, around 30l an hour at 18 knots on 3200 rpm

Sure that weight is right? I

Sure that weight is right? I picked up a 6m rib with a 115 and it weighs less than a ton on the trailer with 100l of fuel.

Smell

my rig started with a slight smell of fuel under the cover wich I ignored thinking it's got to be from the filter ... 6-9 months later I have a stench of fuel in the front yard and its dripping out of the bung hole needless to say my fuel tank was leaki and it got bigger cost me 140l fuel plus new tank just glad nothing caught Fire.

fuel okay

Mark  i would guess the consumption to be close , you have a 6 mt rib which pushes out a lot of water  hence why RIBs alwways require bigger HP , the rig i say yesterday has a 200 ETEC , which is 2 stroke which prefer hard work over the  4 strokes, also i  would cut back to 3000 to 3100 and watch you gauge then as once the 4 strokes are working their economy goes out quickly , you also need to check your trim and maybe have a look at your propellor as well which may be worth changing , but 40 lts to travel 27 N miles isnt to bad

Fuel usage

Hi Mark

My Cruise Craft weighs 2.3T with half a tank of fuel on the trailer, motor on the boat is a yamaha vmax 175 two stroke. Full load of fuel with 3 people and fishing gear I am using 24lt/hr at 3500 rpm and 30lt/hr at 4000 rpm with average water conditions. Fuel usage of my fuel flow gauge.

 I have a 250 4 stroke Yamaha. 3T boat. I use 1l per km (say 40lph at 22knots).

My old boat with 200 4 stroke, 2T, used less, roughly 1.2lt per nm, so 22 knots was about 27-30 kph at 22knots.

Rough calcs.

Thanks guys,

Might need to slow it down closer to 3000rpm a little to get the best fuel consumption so that I am being a bit more efishent.

Ill have to do a few more calcs and keep at a steady rpm over a trip to work out how accurate the gauge is.

I did about a 70km trip out from freo boat ramp to west end with a bit of moving around and used about 90 liters but I did pick up the pace to around 5000rpm for a bit of it.
Mean while my mates 5m tinny with a 60hp 4 stroke does the same trip for 25 liters.

The rib compared to others has a lot of compartments and shower(water tank) on it. I put over a weigh bridge full of gear and fish after a trip so that accounts for the 2 tonne.

With all the putting out of the river do you think trips to Rotto would be better fuel wise to be launching from of Woodmans point?
