is there a normal population of dusky flathead off the beaches of perth? i'm keen to chase them either off the beach or maybe purchase a small tinny and hunt them inshore. any help would be much appreciated as i reckon they're a great feed. cheers peteman

We dont get duskys over here

We dont get duskys over here which is a pity as they can grow quite large (plus common to catch off the beaches overeast).

There are bartails, bluespots and sand(?) flatheads though, maybe some others. Not sure where to chase them inshore but Colin Hay caught one yesterday from floreat groyne. Bit of a fluke and not too large though (but still size).

Offshore, near the edge of bombies is the place to go especially between bombies/outcrops/whatever.

One of my top eating fish too, and not commonly targetted offshore, so will keep an eye on this thread Laughing

Gday there Pete,

You will be often to encounter Bartail Flathead mate, then the Dusky. Dusky's are over East I think?. But Bartail are just as good as anyfish in the sea mate. You won't be dissappointed mate.

Some great ways to target them is to cast some softplastics if not better prawnstars and work them back slowly over the sand patch.

Give it ago!

Cheers lads,

South Beach

Hey mate,

I've seen a few flatties landed at South Beach. The beach left of the southern most groyne. Karlos landed one that went past 45cms. Hope it helps.

cheers guys, i'm origonally from newcastle where you can drift any of the local beaches from sept-mar and land 3-4kg models pretty easily. do you guys think its worth drifting around the beaches off perth to chase flattys, flounder and whiting? i'm not really into the 100m scene and am willing to travel or tow a boat 1-2 hrs for a good trip. cheers again

Flatties!

Fri, 2008-06-06 20:37

I love flatties mate, most i've caught have been in the bottom (closer to the ocean) areas of the river, usually using a white leadhead jig. Bouncing over the sandy areas near large patches of weed. Caught some beauties last year when i was targeting them more than lately.

These are two i caught this year.

Frequently catch them in close to shore on sand/weed ground, but they aren't very big.

Also have a few spots out wide which hold huge amounts of small flathead.

Over the summer months the bigger blue spots come into shallower water. The big females are full of eggs so keep that in mind.

I've caught them to 75cm from surf beaches, sheltered areas behind Garden Island to reef/sand areas on the ocean side of the islands.

Their hard to target specificly but more of a welcome surprise.
