Fishing the Nullarbor?
Submitted by Fathom on Wed, 2010-05-19 16:23
Has anyone had any success fishing the Nullarbor? I will be driving across it again soon and might stop and wet a line. I have had some fun on Pinkies west and south of Ceduna before but I am thinking there is better fishing to be had in the more remote part of the plain. I know there are cliffs most of the way but there is also a few spots to get down to the water and I think chasing Mulloway, Salmon etc. could be worth the hassle?
Anyone done it?

Try Yalata for huge
Try Yalata for huge mullas. It's aboriginal land though so you need to get a permit, and no grog.
Edit: thought I remembered reading a good post on FW regarding Yalata earlier in the year so I did a search. There's a bit of info here.

Yes you have to go to Yalata
A mulloway fisherman's heaven. Steaky Bay on the SA side of the Nullabor is a great spot to visit and to have a fish.

When you heading?
The Mulloway are hard to catch this time of year at Yalata but they are still there but are few and far between. Have heard of some monters over 35kg caught there in late April early May though. October to March tends to be the best time. As for Salmon they are everywhere this time of year as well as sharks. If you cant get to Yalata have a go at Fowlers bay, just go into the kiosk right next to teh jetty and ask where the salmon are being caught. There are always good numbers in Scotts Bay and further around to teh west towards Mexican Hat. If you can get down on a reef ledge and out into deeper water you wll definately get salmon and maybe a snapper. I am assuming you have a 4wd.
Hope this helps

Born and bred from Ceduna
As well as some of the suggestion above heres a little bit extra.
At this time of year the mulloway are scarce, but depending on vehicle Fowlers bay is a definite place worth stopping in at and having a look. Behind fowlers is scotts beach which is good for salmon at this time of year and mulloway can be pulled out of the better gutters (during the hotter months). If you have a 4wd you can gain access by tackling the dunes and shooting straight over to the beach or alternatively take the dirt road west out of town across the sand dunes and come in along the beach from the western end. This is a lot easier if you are inexperienced in the dunes.
Also the point between Fowlers and Scotts is worth a go from some of the rock ledges. You can head along the beach and then take on the small dune towards the end of the beach. Plenty of tracks to follow to a variety of ledges and small bays. Toothy critters at night, salmon, snapper (pinkies) tommies (herring), squid and kingies can be found at various times.
The jetty is also worth a go for some thumping big squid, gar and herring. Sometimes kingies and other larger fish swim past.
After Fowlers there are a number of spots worth a fish on the way to Ceduna. Tuckamore Beach, Point Sincalir and Cactus Beach high cliff as well as Davenport Creek all offer good fishing for a variety of species.
If you have time I would also recommend Locks Well just east of Elliston. It is the premier salmon fishing location in SA. Well worth the treck down the stairs (you will understand if you go).
Hope this helps. Good luck and tight lines.
