You're making me jealous.

My brother in law is in Minnesota and said I could get a glock 40 at Walmart there.  Have fun.  Some awesome tactical crossbows available also if you're into that.

Love the gear.  Always loved guns and knives and so on.

I agree with the comment above - if you can get supply at US wholesale rates and then do some mail order I reckon you will do well.

If you're interested, get onto every Aus. fishing website and start collecting email addresses.  If you can get 500 in 6 months you'll fly......

Yep, Australians have been

Sun, 2012-01-29 11:32

Yep, Australians have been getting shafted on all sorts of stuff for way too long.

The sooner everyone wakes up to it the better.

Businesses will hurt, but it'll cause reform to the extortionate markup (mainly by the redundant distributors)

I recently went to a well known local boat shop to get some service parts and enquired about a vented engine cover I saw in there - to use while running.

I explained that the genuine one I had didn't have vents (Came with the new Zuke).

He asked me where I got it from and I told him the US.

I got a smug smile and smartass response "That's why!" and he started to walk off.

I persisted and told him it's no big deal, as it was thrown in with the engine deal (and they are only US$60 anyways) - but I'm still interested in their vented covers if they had them.

So we went to the counter, and on the way I told him I've got no problem going local if the price is reasonable - but a $9-10k saving on an engine deal was just too much.

(I got in while the Aussie dollar was buying US$1.10 )

Then we got the price on the cover : $389.

I just shook my head, looked at him and said "that's why".

So then I walked over to the service counter and got shafted for $40 on an oil filter I could have scored for US$12.

But hey, I supported local !

Sun, 2012-01-29 11:51

Umm ?? buy a few of the oil filters from the US (you will use them) and even if you pay a stupid freight price it works out cheaper.

I work to hard for my money i prefer not to get ripped off... usually find the service is better US also,

Good luck over there mate buy up big time

The local service I got on

Sun, 2012-01-29 12:04

The local service I got on initial enquiries for an engine was enough to turn me off spending extra.

Then the treatment on the showroom floor was laughable (the joke being on him)

Then I saw two derro apprentices f#cking around like idiots while working on a boat behind the parts / service counter, so they ain't got jack chance of doing any service work either.

Sun, 2012-01-29 12:28

Nope, it's the markup for sure.

I buy all sorts of stuff from the US : Car Parts, Boat Parts, High end Musical instruments and have done all the math.

I import them paying US retail, expensive individual express freight, GST (and import duty where applicable), extortionate LCL freight charges on sea-freight and still come out miles in front.

I did a big post a while back with more details & examples :

man, i have been buying just about everything from either the US or japan since about 2007, your right hands down soo much cheaper. people can crap on about loyalty, warenty etc. i have made several oversease purchases that have been honoured in australia by the major brands for warenty, and my loyalty is to my hip pocket.  When i was living in the pilbara postage fro the US was often cheaper than from perth, go figure?

Hey Tangles, any info you could pass on regarding purchasing HDS7 and HDS8 Lowrance units from there would be cool.

I need to know if they are Geo fenced meaning they cannot be used outside of the states. I am looking at a decent bundle of Lowrance gear there but hard to find out if it will be OK here in OZ with my Navionics card.

Cheers.

Gday Tangles, not sure I can

Wed, 2012-02-01 17:34

Gday Tangles, not sure I can help, but this sounds like a similar situation my mate is in. He had been exporting extremely cheap products from over there somewhere to another mate in Sydney for a couple of years, then all hell broke loose. Turns out the local guys here werent too keen on old mate importing the same product cheaper than what they could get it for, but he told them to stick it in their goaties and get another Tattoo. Anyway, they turned up at his joint on their Harleys, dressed in their man leather and sporting strange hair do's and attempted to discourage him from his current line of work.

I dont think any of our local tackle stores would do this kind of thing, and come to think of it, Im not entirely sure that he was importing fishing tackle from Columbia either though!

I assume this has not helped at all, but Id thought Id share my experience with the importing scene.

Stay cool.

Oh ps, Try Meltons in Calli if you get there, crazy cheap fishing gear (Seriously).

Just on the topic of getting

Wed, 2012-02-01 17:18

Just on the topic of getting shafted, I'm also into pushbikes and there are a couple of US and UK internet sellers that can not only sell you bike gear much cheaper (including freight) but a couple of the UK sellers can get it to your door quicker than the locals!

Wiggle in the UK is known to be able to deliver in two days to Aus on a regular basis. This is coming from the UK, too, not some warehouse in Asia or something. Unbelieveable service.

An Aussie firm has just started competing on price and I'll support them all the way if they can get their stocks up. Hopefully it'll happen in fishing gear.

In bike stuff, though, the word is that it's the local distributors gouging, not the retailers.

Some brands can't be supplied by the US/UK guys because the distribution network won't let the o/seas seller sell to Aus. I assume this means they'd lose their supply source if they did sell o/s.

more on the crazyness, mate

Wed, 2012-02-01 17:36

more on the crazyness, mate tried to import some unit clothing from the states as it was less than half aussie price, aussie brand, twice the price in australia, bike shop in the states would not export back here obviously due to similar agreements. this subject gets flogged to death but i have no drivers lic so shopping online for me is good.

Hell yeah. Certain Billfish lures in Ktown - $95, $57 at Wellsys, $26.95 at Meltons in da US. Freight is around $130 or so, but when you've bought 30 of them (under a grand to avoid GST), it doesnt even compare. MX and LX AVET's $450 Ktown, $399 Bluewater, $159 at Meltons. Dont even start on performance car parts!
