Exmouth tackle box must haves

Tafe finishes for me in a week and a half with STCW95 for the last 6 days.  I am heading up to Exmouth as a Kayak Coastal - Sit on Top Guide for approximately 3 weeks work experience around school holidays followed by a weeks fishing holiday.

I am taking the 4wd, camping gear, fibreglass 14' dinghy 25hp, a 15kg mono trolling outfit, 50lbs sunline fin nor offshore 30l on a berkley sea tec 15-37kg rod for bottom bouncing if the going gets tough, 20 lbs sunline on a shimano symetre 4000 for use on a sp/jig rod, yet to be bought and a 8-9' beach casting rod, yet to be bought.

I am planning to scout territory while kayaking and beach/boat fish in my time off/after the work experience.

What is your must have lures/sp/popper/stickbait/jig must haves for Exmouth? Any suggestions for good rods on the cheap side would be appreciated also.

Bryan

Roosta poppers - 105 / 135 / 195: Gold Chrome

and if you have a trolling outfit, make sure you have at least one Richter Soft Oscar - Luminous or Pink (maybe Adam can disagree with whats more popular).

Trolling a swimmer, I like the rapala x-raps 20 / 30: Blue pilchard colour or a purple.

Just any old soft plastic and jigs you use around Perth will be fine.

Tue, 2011-06-21 21:05

roosta poppers worked excellent when i went up there a few weeks ago, dont have to cast far at all, most hits were 10m out.

lots of sinkers as the bottom

Tue, 2011-06-21 21:33

lots of sinkers as the bottom isnt too bad but the sharks tax a lot of gear and sinkers are expensive up there. We used lots of different jigs up there and had hits on nearly everyone we sent down but again the sharks liked the new jewelery too. Alos if the bugs get you take some tea tree oil as that helps with the itching.

I found the 5" & 7" Snapbacks

Wed, 2011-06-22 08:29

I found the 5" & 7" Snapbacks were good up there as they seem to resist teeth a little better than most plastics........... I did also catch a heap of fish on the Squdigy Flickbaits in the larger sizes, the green and orange/pink ones seemed to be go

Don't go overboard

Wed, 2011-06-22 09:07

Just don't go overboard, I speak to so many people that bring thousands of dollars worth of stuff and use about 1/50th of it.  Just stick to your essentials and stick to your game plan.

Not a chance with my budget!

Wed, 2011-06-22 09:18

Im seeking advice to cull to about 5 items and I was calling a few mates scrounging old lures and bits last night.

I generally keep it pretty simple and just bait fish, but I want to have a good crack with soft plastics, poppers, metal slices and bibbed lures this time so I think that is what I will focus on.

just to rub it in there were queenies smashing bait this morning with quite a few landed up to about a metre. Sun slowly rising and the cool sand under foot with bait going everywhere was a great way to start the day

Gday mate, i would have to

Wed, 2011-06-22 09:40

Gday mate, i would have to agree with a number of the suggestions given already such as halco roosta poppers, halco twisties and one trolling lure that i didnt spot being mentioned was the lazerpro 190xdd redneck.absolutely dynamite lure that accounted for a few macks up in exy and more recently the mackeral here in perth. as for a good 9'0'' rod the new shakespeare beach elite series even though a touch cheaper (eg;$120) its still an awesome rod that will do all you need up there.6-10kg line class so spangles, trevally and the likes should be a breeze. oh and the most important thing in my opinion would be a can of bushmans repelent....only stuff that actually works!!! Feel free to swing by the store if you have any other questions at all or to pick up a can of bushmans!

Jarrad

trace line

Wed, 2011-06-22 09:56

i go up a couple of times a year and laugh at all the guys using 80 and 100 pound trace line whilst fishing for demersals they get smashed up by cod and lose heaps of gear! i go a little overkill and use 200 pound black magic tough trace i do lose some gear but no where near mate the guys i go up with do!!
