Dunsborough Yellowfin whiting?

I'm headed down south next week and hope to get a bit of fishing in (in between all the surfing).

I've heard of yellowfin whiting being caught around the Dunsborough/Quindalup area along the sand flats there. One species I havent caught but keen to go see if I can hook into a few. Is there any tips anyone has for catching them? E.g. time of day, tide, gear, etc. Ideally I want to get some on plastics or fly but maybe i'll revert to crawling some squid tentacles along just to be sure they're there Wink

Probably will try for some squid and snorkel for a few crabs after dark too. If any fellow fishwreckers down there at the same time want to catch up for a fish or a surf, let me know.

Matt look for sand patches

look for the sand patches and then you should find them. we get them all along the coast here off the beach.

they get them on poppers when it warms up.

otherwise use a paternoster and keep it moving, and wont hurt to walk the beaches..... throw some berley

hope the weather holds up

Actually, if I was fishing

Actually, if I was fishing from a boat in shallow water I have some 1.5, 3 and 5g maria little bit jigs..... Wink. You can cast them, then work them a bit like SPs (jerk, then let flutter and repeat). Not sure if it'd be the most effective option on whiting (who primarily feed on worms afaik?).

Any best tides or times of day? Schoolies seem to be most of the time, or at night, but not so sure about yellowfin, if they swim, behave or hang out in different places.

best way i know to catch

Fri, 2010-01-01 18:27

best way i know to catch them is to walk the beach at lunch time with the sun direct overhead while wear polariod sunnies .. as for tackle and baits i use a very light bream rod with a 1000 sized reel spooled with 1kg mono (2nd spool 4 lb braid)

best rigs are simple running sinker 30cm infront of the hook , use only enough weight to be able to cast as far as you can see infront of you into the water (few grams) best baits are blood and sand worms

hope you get a few.

A good SP is the Gulp

Fri, 2010-01-01 19:52

A good SP is the Gulp sandworm in the natural colour. Also have caught sandies on tiny poppers. Great fun when there on the bite. Been fishing from Dunsborough town to the old boat ramp with good results on sandies but never have caught yellowfin.

Saw some whiting today. KG's and good sized yellowfin and flathead. Was diving for crabs but got a few pics. Will have to upload when I get access to a decent connection.

Might try with a line tomorrow. Thanks for the tips guys.

I was down there last week - Just north of Busso Jetty in front Herring St walk down to the beach with small hooks on a paternoster and a bag of prawns and you should get 4 - 5 25 - 30 cm Yellowfin within a few hours . We were getting them consistently every day from 2pm onwards.
