Drowning Contos

Unsure of the details but its been confirmed two blokes swept off the rocks and were spotted 400 m offshore... They were recovered but unfortunately one of the lads didn't make it...

I haven't heard the term king wave thrown around as yet...

The swell is 3m @ 16 which is getting right up there, a long strong period swell  - you'd want to know what you are doing fishing on any granite down here especially when there are rain showers around making the black granite like standing on ice....

Sad to hear the bloke didnt make it...

Very sad indeed. Should never have been anywhere near contos with those conditions. Need to have your wits about you down there. Can sneak up on you on the best of days

sad , and condolences to their familys

harvey is a small town and has had a few local tragedys lately

however i wholeheartedly agree, with the above comments

contos is a low swell , dry day fishing spot, swell was way to big and period would have made it ugly off those rocks , there steep and suss at best of times

even the beach yesterday would have been near on impossible to fish

agree not a king wave , just the combination of swell height and wave energy
https://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/comparative-swells-data.asp

i hope they dont call it for a king wave ..as it reads like they where unlucky and experienced a freak event ,,,when in reality there odds to have those rocks a wash with green and white water where high in those conditions they where trying to fish in and near on certain to end up like like they did in the water unfortunatly

Sad  to hear of another loss

Sun, 2020-04-26 04:53

Sad  to hear of another loss of a life for a fish. The area is known as a dangerous place to fish in rough conditions. Yet people still go and risk it . Condolences to the family and friends

A relative of my wife almost drowned at Contos many years ago

Sun, 2020-04-26 08:44

Tragically her 6 year old son who was with her on the rocks at the time did drown that day.

They were standing on the rocks with the husband and their other older son and the husband went back to the car with the older boy to get his camera when a massive wave dragged the other two into the water.

Luckily for the woman, a surfer was able to somehow paddle out and rescue her, as she was close to exhaustion after being in the water for some time and had also injured her shoulder when washed in.

Poor little Danny was found a couple of days later washed up on the beach.

Very sad, but another tragic example of the danger at Contos.

Very sad, something that no family would ever want to go through. I've never fished there but judging from above comments its a place where life vest should be a high priority for fishos? Is there any signage stating the dangers of fishing from the rocks there? No fish is worth a life

 That really hits the heart

Sun, 2020-04-26 20:39

That really hits the heart gadsy and this recent one would have a sad story also. I don't want to take away from this but i got a near miss from round yallingup. I'll Be quick, but warned these two herring fishos to move because of the waves coming in, I felt like their mother after dirty looks for the tenth time and in the end didn't tell them about the next set. I climbed up my rock for the hundredth time and it washed them across the rocks and they feared for their life by the looks in their eyes. They gave me a look I'll never forget when they got to safety near me. Checked the same spot later that trip and went elsewhere because of the swell, I came back to check and ses had it closed off as two blokes had drowned. Just thought it worth telling

You think it was the same

Mon, 2020-04-27 08:19

You think it was the same young fellas that died Jim?

Fools if it was...

It's hard to explain to people how slippery the black granite is down here.

You can be standing on it on a ever so slightl angle when it's dry and it's fine. Get some rain or have a wave wash over it and you feel like a curling puck.

You just can't stop yourself from sliding, eventually it'll get steeper and there is a good chance you'll be dead.

The boys that fish the stones often will attest to this, most places worth fishing are deep out in front and the barnacles are menacing.

You'd be cut to bits attempting to get back up, which in most cases is impossible but no doubt these poor folk try...

I very much doubt it was the same blokes  after what they went thru. These waves didn't look big but they had so much power.  Just on the slipperiness of the algae, even morning dew has caught me out and I dislocated my shoulder, still bloody hurts!

Hey booney . Do they still

Mon, 2020-04-27 09:55

Hey booney . Do they still have tie down eyelets on a lot of the rocks down that way. Last time I fished a place called slopey from memory just south of contos they had not long put some in . My understanding they were going to put them in all over t he place for fishos to tie onto.

My opinion if it's that rough you shouldn't be fishing there in the first place.

One place I do remember going to once and only once was a spot they called suicide rock

yes , there are some rock

Mon, 2020-04-27 13:03

yes , there are some rock anchors along that bit of coast russell

the problem as i see it this

1 the sky is blue and sun is warm , light wind , so people think its a good day to fish , they dont seem to check swell or understand swell and swell periods

2 they dont pre check weather forecasts ,for the most suitable day they just pick a ''day '' that suits their prior commitments etc

3 upon arrival to aspot , many dont stop and spend 15 mins to watch the rocks or waves/swell before they make their choice of where to fish

4 many dont have safety gear , rock hopper boots etc or tie off to an anchor point

5 many dont have self inflating vests and are poor swimmers

on a day like saturday at contos , it would have been reasonably clear to anyone wanting to fish it if they , had of done the above checks they should have noted it was not safe ,

,the granite face there is pretty steep and as timboon said its like ice when wet ..

other places like cosy corner or foul bay would have been better in that swell and conditions

This is Contos on a 2.5m

Mon, 2020-04-27 13:22

This is Contos on a 2.5m swell, my Mrs was having an anxiety attack with me getting even this close. Very unforgiving stretch of coastline. Condolences to the families.
