Dont ya hate that!!!

Got down the beach last night set up my chair, rod holder, bait, grabbed a beer snd got ready for a good nights fishing.....

First cast and I felt a knot in the line go flying through the eyes...........looked down at my reel and SHIT!!!!! I was down to Mono!!!

I specically asked them at the tackle shop to fill my spool with braid.........no mono!

I couldnt cast it with a bloody great knot in it so my only choice was to take the braid off.........second cast.......twang!.........look down at my reel and no line left on the spool!!!!!!!!  FUCK!!!

Pack the gear up, grab another beer and watch my mate pull in 3 Tailor in as many minutes.......

Oh well.......a bad days fishing is better than a good day at work.

I've never heard of anyone being spooled mid cast before! What size reel are you using?

Not Good Mate

Did you purchase braid? If so what length? My shop has always spooled for me with some mono backing but I have never been short changed on the braid! Generally the mono comes free as part of the spooling service.

The other suggestion is that you always have some backup. A spare reel or a combo is always good insurance to avoid wasting an opportunity of something goes wrong.

I dont think there is much

Sun, 2011-12-18 14:42

I dont think there is much point kicking up stink as I dont have a receipt and they will just say that I got what I paid for............I didnt like that braid anyway, so it gives me a good excuse to go buy some better stuff.

What type of reel.....Penn 760L live liner ........I just ran out of line

I did have some back up but my old man was using it.

the mono is so that the

the mono is so that the braid has something to grip onto, meaning it wont slip. It also means that the braid will fill the rest of the spool - If you try and spool a 2500 sized Stradic with 150yds of Sunline only(for example), its just not going to fill it, you will be left with several Millimetres of empty spool. It is also often a challenge estimating the amount of backing needed when spooling it on the machine. Saying that, however, the person that spooled your reel should have flicked it over to reverse and taken off the braid and most of the backing, then respooled it correctly.

How much backing do you need (minimum)? Mine had near on half the spool.

way too much. Your 760L can hold 330yd of 20lb mono (0.3-0.35mm). This means that it can easily fit 300yd of braid of the same thickness. This means that if the thickness of your chosen braid is below the standard thickness of the 20lb mono suggestion, it means that you can fit on (x) amount of metres of backing. Id probably go with around 30m of backing for it. This means that if you get down to the backing, you will have 30m approx to really fight the fish and get some line back.

but he probably only bought a 150 yard spool of braid?? therefore, he will need more backing to fill it.

Those 760 slammers

Sun, 2011-12-18 15:39

should hold around 250m+ of 20lb mono, so i can't work out how you ran out of braid then mono on the 2nd cast...

The reason I ran out was, there wasnt enough left?

I was assuming It was all braid, and I was down to about 1/2 to 3/4 of a spool left...........if it was all braid, there would have been plenty of yards left. But because there was mono underneath and very heavy line ( about 50 lbs Im assuming) once I took the braid off ( because of the knot) It left me bugger all line.

you have to nut it out

Sun, 2011-12-18 15:50

should be line dia / metres on your spool ...as Leemo said mono is just there to top the spool up to the lip with the braid

This may be a silly Idea....

Sun, 2011-12-18 16:01

When I do it myself, which I don't always, I use electrical tape on the spool as backing and then tie and spool the braid. That way there are no knots and the reel is braid only. The only reason for backing really is to stop the braid slipping on the spool (or at least I think it is). Don't shy away from the braid mate. I swear by it but it's horses for courses and what feels good for you. Don't let a bad experience spoil your judgement.

Shit no! I would never go

Sun, 2011-12-18 16:11

Shit no! I would never go back to mono.....I love braid.....just a different type........the stuff I had was like dental floss, it would frey and cut real easy. A couple mates have got Spiderwire, and have been really happy with it, so Ill give that a go I reckon. We do a lot of beach/reef fishing and the Spiderwire seems to handle the abrasion well.

 Spiderwire isnt too bad.

Sun, 2011-12-18 16:17

Spiderwire isnt too bad. Usually i suggest sunline super PE - at about 40 bucks a spool, it is extremely good value for money.
